Albert Hammond - The Free Electric Band 1973
Albert Hammond - Free Electric Band 1973 My father is a doctor, he's a familiary man, My mother works for charity whenever she can, And they're both good clean Americans who abide by the law, And they both stick up for liberty and they both support the war, My happiness was made for when they laid their money down, For Summers in a Summer camp, and Winters in the town, My future in the system was talked about and planned, But I gave it up for music and the free electric band I went to school in hand-washed shirts with nearly ordered hair, The school was big and newly built and filled with light and air, And the teacher taught us values that we had to learn to keep, And he clipped the ear of many idle kid who went to sleep, And my father organized for me a college in the East, But I went to California, the sun-shine and the beach, My parents and my lecturers could never understand, Why I gave it up for music and the free electric band Well, they used to sit and speculate upon their son's career, A lawer or a doctor or a civil engineer, Just give me bread and water, put a guitar in my hand, 'cause all I need is music and a free electric band. My father sent me money and I spent it all on grass, On a girl I met in Berkeley in a social science class, And I learned about her body, but her mind I didn't know, Until the rootel attitudes and morals began to show, She wanted to get married, even though she never said, But I knew her well enough by now to see inside her head, She'd settled for suburbia and a little patch of land, So I geave her up for music and the free electric band. Hoo Hoo the free electric band da ba dab da dab da dab the free electric band da ba dab da dab da dab

I walked around in ...
I walked around in wrinkled shirts No power irons here And the farm was big and icy cold In winter hard to bear It's a future bought with tallow 'Cus those candlesticks were cheap And they must make do with great big awkward Shears for shearing sheep And my father visionized for me To follow his caprice Had a dented crank Victrola Upon the mantelpiece My parents weren't adventurers Into electric-land They will never blow a fuse - it's Not for pre-electric man

´Cause he can! He ...
´Cause he can! He doesn´t need a soundcard, no computer and no glamorous casting show watched at millions of freeky, incapable of criticism teenies. He only needs bread (no dress of meat), water (no wodka to get 4.2 %o ) and a guitarr (no legions of promoter and advertising agencies). Thats the different between an musician and the labelmarionetts of today.

"Regard the lilies ...
"Regard the lilies of the field. They labour not, neither do they spin, and yet I tell you that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed as one of these." Natural virtues soon become vices when they are not kept in check. The USA is a prime example. The mafia are Can Do "go-getters". Get a life.

Singing - surfing - ...
Singing - surfing - smoking grass - (fucking on the beach) - what a beautiful life - parents and lecturers - they all couldn't understand - a free electric band is so much better - let's go partying - but does only one waste an idea who of these hard working idiots - no party, no free electric band a.s.o. - is paying with his hard earned dollars for the free living feeling of some freaks?? No doubt - that these guys never think about the next days or years - someone will take care of them

You summed it up ...
You summed it up very well!!! When I was a child I thought Milli Vanilli, New Kids On The Block, etc. sound so boring compared to the Beatles, the Who, etc. (I knew them from my father's MCs which he played in his car). I started collecting records when I was 11 and I'm glad I discovered many musicians I'd have never heard of otherwise at flea markets and albums by musicans who are only know for a few "oldies" like Albert Hammond, who IMHO is a great songwriter.

its marketing and ...
its marketing and education.less education = falling on mainstream. Hell we even had a comic frog at Number One in the charts because of marketing. thats the way it goes, we should not argue about it, but enjoying the good musicians. And I guess it also depends on how you grew up, my father was (is) a music enthusiastic and I heard many records he and his brother listened to , so I got the touch back in my youth in the 70s and 80s how good music should be. Music, not the show.

No, there are many ...
No, there are many good musicians who don't have a large following in Germany. Lots are even quite unknown. I've unfortunately met many David Hasselhoff, Dieter Bohlen, Kelly Family, etc. fans but don't know any (or only one or two others apart from me) fans of Rory Gallagher, Alex Harvey, Geordie, Moody Blues, etc. Let's face it: most people only listen (and know) mainstream acts that are frequently on MTV, radio or in the papers.

Well, apparently ...
Well, apparently there are many comments from German kids who heard this song in their English lessons (seems like the lyrics are in their school book). I'm Austrian and grew up with his songs, which were among the first songs I recorded with my casette player when I was a child. Some years later ""The Free Electric Band" was one of my first 45s. Unfortunately most people my age only know Albert Hammond jr. (some not even him) although Albert Hammond is at least as good as his son.
