Fun Science: The Moon

A not-very-in-depth look into why we even have a moon, and the effect that the moon has had on our planet. From the perspective of a science fan... rather than a proper scientist.

I agree, he should ...
I agree, he should do one about wind! it's a very interesting subject. However to answer your question, though, varying levels of heat cause pockets of high and low pressure on the earth. The high pressure is very condensed, and naturally spreads out into areas of lower pressure, and vise versa. ^^;

Wouldn't it hit the ...
Wouldn't it hit the earth then fly off at a rapid pace, but then be reigned in by gravity, causing it to slow to the speed of 4cm per year? It's not like it violently collided with the earth then just inched away, it had to be flung off first. Therefore it would be 38,000,000,000cm away without a problem.
Fawnkit1

You mentioned that ...
You mentioned that the moon is moving away from the earth at a rate of 4cm per year. If the moon is 4.4 billion years old, it would mean that when the moon first appeared, it would be 20,000,000,000 Centimeters away from the earth. The moon is now over 38,000,000,000cm from the earth. That would mean that the moon was over 105,000 MILES closer to the earth. The gravitational effect would have caused major catastrophe on the earth, would it not? The theory contradicts itself.
