Because you ur family grew up without the typical american view that they are entitled to good grades and a good education and free medical care and free everything else with NO EFFORT on their part. Their Big Brother taught them that america is about happiness, as opposed to THE PURSUIT of happiness. Removing that one word changes everything.They think happiness is OWED to them. Bzzzt! Cause its the pursuing that is guaranteed, Not finding, cause we all know lots of people that are NEVER happy!

For example: The Federal govt had no function in education before the late 1800s and up to the 1930s, 90% was done locally, paid for by the parents directly. Then the fed started to take over and soon, knowledge was down. The response was "we can't change it fast enough cause we need more power". Every year they got, and still get, more power and throw more money at the local skools, and they get worse. So the question is: with a record of 0-80, can we safely conclude that we need a new coach?

This reminds me of the people who say I'm negative because I know these facts about the world, but they don't want to hear it...I say an easily verifiable fact: like "National security memorandum 200 exists" and people say "never heard of it". so then I quote from it and they want to argue it doesn't say that. But all footage is incomplete so unless you want to watch one clip in existence 82 billion min long, we need to watch various viewpoints, check various sources, weigh it and then decide. Salesmen never like probing questions about what they're selling, esp. in front of potential customers. Ever it has been thus. For 1, no, I just use profanity because witty responses are a lot more enjoyable for me to make, and these youtubes debates are mostly meaningless outside of that personal enjoyment.For two, I'm seemingly the only 1 positive here about the situation. I said what was nice about the system, and that we're not all delinquents if we don't pay a big check to some for profit school. I'm asking for reform,not demonizing public education with some clever picked footage that distorts the issue like this.

I'll partly agree with your statement. Attitudes do change with pay!! I know plenty of teachers that thought they were underpaid because not of how hard it was to teach kids, but dealing with the social deviants that made their job hard. The pot heads, the jocks and "cool" kids that disrupt classes and then require additional help!! If everyone just behaves and listens to the teacher, they'll learn. That discipline is on the parent. Too many kids/parent take school for granted.

Hey, I and just about everyone of my brothers, sisters and family members went to public schools in the U.S after moving from Pakistan, and we all did fine. There is more responsibility on the parent and the child than on the teacher and the school system. I know plenty of kids that were taught right beside me but never took the initiative to learn. You think that 18 year old kid in the video that can't read is the school systems fault??? Hell no!! That's all on parent.

We just need to remember: "he who pays the piper, calls the tune". If I pay directly for private skool they are all responsive to me... cause I'm the customer... On the other hand at public skool does any teacher listen to my concerns... NO. I'm not the money, I'm NOT THE customer. Its MY money but the ONLY way I've EVER gotten them to listen is...FILE HOMESCHOOL PAPERWORK. THAT removes their funding (temporarily)! Then a week later those public servants have a WHOLE new attitude, it works!

Its not so much that people cant spell... its worse. They DONT KNOW what words mean. For example: piece instead of peace, than instead of then, well when they mean "while" or perhaps "will" or maybe they dont even know what they mean... And the skools (the logical spelling) DONT need more money. I've been hearing that old mantra since the 1970s. They get increases EVERY year, and the more money they get the worse they teach. Maybe the skools exist now for money instead of teaching children????

There needs to be a ...
There needs to be a fair balance between being consideration of the student's circumstances, and personal responsibility. You can't just entirely blame them and think that fear of the backhand will encourage your kids to obtain marketable skills and insight. Beating your kids won't breed rationality or professionals, and it's a simplistic way to look at things. It only drove me further into a pit of cynicism and defiance when mine did.

Really? I'm a public high school student. I take all Advanced Placement and Honors classes. Insight and expression is encouraged, and help to breed minds that not only can innovate are articulate, but calculate is provided. This is just some bullshit to make Americans further depreciate public educators, and try to make something that should be provided to EVERYBODY dominated by private enterprise, not actually reform the system. Stossel is a vile human being and I see right through this.

50% of the Ivy ...
50% of the Ivy colleges in the U.S are foreign students. Asians, like my self, are being rejected by colleges because there is too many of us, even though we account for 3% of U.S population. And no i don;t have kids but yes the culture i come from, I got beat for bad test grades and misbehaving. Yeah I know its not the most moral thing, but that motivational "don't worry son, do better next time" crap only goes so far.

It's a free public ...
It's a free public education system that is paid by the everyday tax payer, that is different than each and every individual paying up front for school. Let's face it, the majority of stupid Americans are from the underprivileged, who probably pay little to nothing in taxes..so technically they are getting a free education. I'm not saying all parents don't discipline their kids, but comparing education culture from here compared to foreigners, it's very different.

Education is not FREE.We who pay taxes are footing the bill for a system which is obviously broken. Do you really think that parents don't care?
