How cheap is a cheap power supply?

For $5 you could ...
For $5 you could make a much better power supply by hand lol. 1 scrap transformer, 1 bridge rectifier, 1 big capacitor, 1 small capacitor, and a linear regulator.

i bought a made-in- ...
i bought a made-in-china power supply for a hard drive from ebay and it was almost identical to that one. when i hooked it up it exploded and the room's fuse popped.

Basicly you bought ...
Basicly you bought the same thing as an original one. It's just that the one you got does not have those useless filters and additional protection. The capacitor will burn again if you don't make a filter circuit on the low voltage side, after the diode. It's a simple fix and the only other diference will be the short circuit protection will be missing and if you somehow manage to make a short, you will be left with a gaping whole in the power transistor, aswell as few other blown up components.

Wow I could ...
Wow I could probably MAKE a power supply better than that-and electronics isn't even my college major! The scary thing is that it actually has the CANON logo on it despite clearly (from the inside) not being a canon product. So I could go to the store and buy one that looks exactly like a canon power supply but the only way I would know is to probe the output and the store probably wouldn't even know what I was talking about when I said "It's not regulated properly". Jeez
