I've never seen ...
I've never seen this! "Can I call him Tone?" Ahh, she's hilarious.

You are just a ...
You are just a hater. It is so clear you don't know the repertoire of Ms. Winehouse at all (at least 7 CDs, plus some DVDs). But artistic value has nothing to do with the number of albums, sales or drug problems. And Ms Winehouse is NOT influenced by Ms Holiday at all! You must be musically deaf to say that. She liked Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington. Every pro that heard Ms Winehouse recognises she had something very rare, including Mr Bennett, one who knew most of the jazz greats. (cont'd)

So Mr Bennett knows ...
So Mr Bennett knows a lot better than you. He said: • Ms Winehouse "knows how to intuitively improvise and make it believable, and sing with humanity and soul -- honesty, no compromising, singing it the right way." • "was a true jazz artist in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holliday. She was really a true great jazz singer." • "had the whole gift." • "Body And Soul ... is a testament to her artistic genius and her brilliance as one of the most honest musicians I have ever known."

I don't agree but history will decide.

in terms of talent ...
in terms of talent you have to have a talent for HAVING talent and what little talent she had she was unable to handle so in terms of historical significance there's no way poor silly Amy's meagre contribution to music will be featuring in decades to come the way Holiday is still recognised today Amy was much more concerned with drugs than with music so her output was unimpressive - she'll be remembered more for being a junkie - which is always a side-line comment when Holiday is remembered

I wasn't comparing ...
I wasn't comparing them I was just saying that she was addicted too and you don't judge her because of it. I agree that there is no comparison between the two, in fact THAT IS what I argued in the first place! Also Amy has written almost all of her songs while Billie was mainly singing standards. They are both great artists but I beg people to stop comparing them! They are talented in their own right!

This is why I find ...
This is why I find any comparison a joke The Whine is from a privelidged background - she did one album and she's called a genius Billie Holiday was from dirt poverty, was in a child reform school because she was so neglected - she had cause to turn to addiction in 1950 alone Holiday produced FIVE albums!! and through her life produced 22 albums of definitive music of complete and total originality there is NO comparison - in fact it's offensive to Holiday as an artist

It's called a ...
It's called a disease which you start yourself but after that it just goes on and it's hard to stop. Of course there are psychological factors which we don't know much about but we shouldn't judge her. By the end ironically she wasn't doing any drugs, she was just drinking which caused her death not the drugs. I'm a fan and I hated that she was an addict cause I wanted her to get better so she didn't motivate me to do drugs. By the way you do know that Billie was addicted to drugs herself too?

the age group she ...
the age group she appealed to had no idea how derivative she was - everyone over 45 had seen it done better by all the people you mention she glamourised crack -thats what she introduced young people to - not music - I hated her for that - I detest junkies she loved being a junkie - not being an artist - which is why she ruined her voice free-basing crack on foil - that was always more important to her her death was her best career move she was an idiot

@grai She was very ...
@grai She was very (and still is) influential in today's music business bringing the UK in back into the spotlight music-wise. She might not be a legend (to me and her other fans she is) but she was very talented and without a doubt an artist/songwriter who has shaken up mainstream music industry from a slumber, re-introducing old genres to an age-group who couldn't even spell Motown or Jazz before her. She did it with good quality as well. I wish she lived longer continuing this process.

@maszlagma two ...
@maszlagma two derivative albums doesnt make ANYONE a legend or a genius someone deserving the accolades may have been in with a chance if they'd stayed off the crack
grai

@grai Well then you ...
@grai Well then you just said the magic phrase: "matter of opinion". In my opinion Amy is doing her thing her and not trying to channel anyone. She might have been influenced by Billie but Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington were both bigger influences in her life so if she wanted to impersonate anyone, it would have been those two. She has two albums by the way...
maszlagma

@maszlagma its a ...
@maszlagma its a matter of opinion - personally I think Holiday had a massive voice and UNDERSANG everything to give it a jazz style and an intensity no-one could come close to I would not DREAM of comparing Amy Whine to Billie Holiday!! on any level!! - AW released one derivative album and then died - in musical history terms - Big deal
grai

@grai Oh, come on! ...
@grai Oh, come on! I love Billie but everyone knows that she didn't have a big range or the best controlled voice. However, Billie's voice was unique, she was an amazing performer, and had great phrasing which made her a great jazz artist. I dont like to compare artists as I believe that good artists cannot be compared as they each have their own style.You are saying that she impersonates Billie but it's just her voice that resembles (slightly) to Billie's otherwise everything else is different.
maszlagma

@maszlagma no-one ...
@maszlagma no-one had more control than Billie Holiday - certainly not this hopeless junkie - she never came close - its even a lousy impersonation
grai

@grai She is not ...
@grai She is not channelling a particular person, it's her voice which is similar to Billie's but with more control.
