The katas are just ...
The katas are just "openings" in chess. The basic patterns and movements. Everything else is improv and reflexes. But its important that the improv part is structured, for example its stupid to assume that dodging a move in a wrong direction or partially or with wrong posture (losing balance) wont get your head cut off. When you ingrain correct patterns in your muscle memory you will use them instinctively in different situations with greater effectiveness than someone that didn't practice them.

I think you'll ...
I think you'll find that any of the "martial arts" exist solely in terms of mental disciplines. Extract any of them into a situation involving an "actual scenario" and they're all of next to no use whatsoever. Kendo is the only approximation of actual Japanese swordplay we have, as far as I know. Kenjutsu involves swinging blades at bundles of straw and practicing movements. It's likely even more far removed from the real thing than Kendo. None of these things are "real."

Im not saying its ...
Im not saying its the same as super amazing legendary battles but like I said with Taekwondo, Its ineffective in an actual scenario involving you to defend yourself because it s all based around being competitive. Where as a true defensive martial art like Aikido can be used beacause thats what its there for. Does the same go for Kendo or is that actually the technique a swordsman would use in the event he had to use an edged weapon?

The only core ...
The only core difference, as far as I know, is the introduction of padding and non-lethal sword imitations. Which only illustrates my point. Replace those things with actual edged weapons and period-appropriate armor and you would have a blood bath. The "Samurai duels" of history were mainly fought with bows, anyway. You see with a bow, you could have a true duel. The armor was effective enough that fights would go on for a long time and really test the combatants.

So are the Kendo ...
So are the Kendo masters. They're very good. And they beat each other all the time. There's no one unbeatable fighter and that speaks to the basic historicity of "legendary" swordsmen. Even the best fighter would lose his life at least half the time when fighting similarly-skilled opponents. The legends are just that. Influential warriors / leaders whose exploits get inflated in the passage of time. There was never a "legendary" swordsman. Just soldiers.

Isnt that because ...
Isnt that because the fundamentals of Kendo are based around the whole competetive aspect, where as Kenjutsu would be with the intent of inflicting harm? Sorta like comparing Aikido to Taekowndo?

You realize how ...
You realize how messy this would be with actual edged weapons, right? It may have derived from "katana fighting" but in practice I highly doubt it even remotely resembles the real thing. Hence why the myths of "legendary swordsmen" are just that. Even the very best "kendo masters" would die multiple times in any given tournament, were the weapons actually edged.

European ...
European swordsmanship? Kendo is not about entertaining. It has a deeper meaning to the ones who study this beautiful art. Kendo is based off of samurai katana fighting. I repeat BASED off of. In my opinion it takes someone who is truely skilled with a sword to do this. Not everyone can do kendo. That is a fact.

@storyacoustic ...
@storyacoustic Where did the guy who won the match hit? Also, do you have to call out the area your trying to hit? So you need to yell out 'men' before striking there head?
IRatchetI

Both competitors ...
Both competitors are trying to hit specific targets on their opponent: head, throat, abdomen, forearms. In order for the hit to count, it must be made with the end section of the sword (representing the curved edge and sharpened point) with proper posture. Yelling in each other's faces is optional.
