An Experiment in Back Yard Sustainability

Peak Moment 51: Tour Scott McGuire's "White Sage Gardens" in the back yard of his rental home -- a demonstration site for suburban sustainability. He ponders, "How might a household produce and preserve a significant portion of its own food supply?" Composting, a water-conserving greenhouse, and seed-saving are all facets of this beautiful work in progress. [www.whitesagegardens.com]

Excellent!! Most helpful vid I've ever seen on utube. If you enjoyed it, I suggest you read the Ringing Cedars of Russia series for a lot of growing techniques and a coherent image of a new world and how we might get there. Also see utube vids by Bill Mollison (permaculture inventor).

"To live in Holy Balance with the Planet" a most noble aim indeed... may we all strive to emulate it !

Fact: All the planets are cooling, all polar caps growing. No solar flares Aug'08. Scientists this week abandoned the false "global warming" hypothesis. (It's a fraud set up to tax you for living.) Fact: Everyone on planet w/ 1/4 acre in Austr leaves Qnsld empty. Fact: All the cows on planet produce enough milk for 1 cup per person p day. There is plenty for everyone. The problem is 12 - 15 families have 99% of the wealth - and they want to indenture the rest. It's the medieval model

Question: I agree with the concept. I grew up on a farm and we had 26 acres to seperate out our varieties. My question is this. If you cram all your open pollinated plants of the same family together, i.e. different types of tomatoes, peppers, beans, etc. how can you maintain the kind of seed you want rather than creating a bunch of hybrids through cross pollination? I ask this because now that I live on a city lot, I need to know how to maintain my favorite types in a small space.

hi, I live in very small apartment in Germany with a balcony sizing north. Is there any way I can grow my food at home? I cannot move any where soon. Any suggestion? Energy efficiency wise is it smart to grow vegetable indoors or with very little sun.

Look into live foods and sprouting. Start with Ann Wigmore and go from there.
