I always saw music from that era as taking an overall darker tone with grunge bands breaking out into the mainstream and replacing hair metal bands from the 80s. The 80s to me was about having a good time and partying and being completely self-centered. The early 90s seemed more morose and the late 90s lightened up a bit. Then again I don't actually remember anything further back than 1996, so I could be wrong.
