The first one being the local tribes - the Thracians, the second one - the Slavs, who gave their language to the modern ethnic Bulgarians and the third - the Bulgars, from whom the ethnonym and the statehood were inherited. The Bulgars were a seminomadic people of obscure ethnicity, who during the 2nd century migrated from Central Asia into the North Caucasian steppe. Between 377 and 453 they took part in the Hunic raids on Central and Western Europe. After Attila's death in 453, and the subsequent disintegration of the Hunnish empire, the Bulgar tribes dispersed mostly to the eastern and southeastern parts of Europe. In the late 7th century, some Bulgar tribes, led by Asparukh and others, led by Kouber, permanently settled in the Balkans, joining the southern Slavic tribes[5]. Together, the two peoples formed the First Bulgarian Empire in 680-681. The ancient Thracians were a group of ancient Indo-European tribes who spoke the Thracian language - a scarcely attested branch of the Indo-European language family. Those peoples inhabited the Eastern, Central and Southern part of the Balkan peninsula, as well as the adjacent parts of Eastern Europe. In the 6th century some Thracian tribes south of the Danube river made contacts with the invading Slavs and were later Slavicised. Thus they became one of the main ethnic elements in the consolidation of the Bulgarian nation in 8-9th century. Linguistic evidence about this is the presence of Thracian and direct Latin loanwords in Old Bulgarian and modern Bulgarian language. The archaeological research of the Thracian culture started in the 20th century and especially after World War II, mainly on the territory of Southern Bulgaria. As a result of intensive excavation works in the 1960s and 1970s a number of Thracian tombs and sanctuaries were discovered. More significant among them are: the Tomb of Sveshtari, the Tomb of Kazanlak, Tatul, Seuthopolis, Perperikon, the Tomb of Aleksandrovo, Sarmizegetusa, etc. Also a large number of elaborately crafted gold and silver treasure sets from the 5th and 4th century BC were unearthed. In the following decades those were exposed in museums around the world, thus gaining popularity and becoming an emblem of the ancient Thracian culture. Since the year 2000, Bulgarian archaeologist Georgi Kitov has made discoveries in Central Bulgaria which were summarized as "The Valley of the Thracian Kings". On 19 August 2005, some Bulgarian archaeologists announced they had found the first Thracian capital, which was situated near Karlovo in Bulgaria. A lot of polished ceramic artifacts (pieces of roof-tiles and Greek-like vases) were discovered revealing the fortune of the city. The Bulgarian Ministry of Culture declared its support to the excavations. In Dabene, Bulgaria, a cache of more than 15,000 gold Thracian artifacts were discovered, including thousands of rings. In August 2006 a sensational archaeological find was made near the village of Dubovo. A Thracian dagger made of an alloy of gold and platinum, sharp, and in perfect condition, was found in a tomb near the village of Dubovo

You are both wrong!

The modern Bulgarians and Romanians have Thracian ancestors, they both also have some Celtic ancestors and the Romanians have Roman blood too.

What grounds do you have to back your statement up ? I can think of many things, but nothing can be 100% sure as our history is such a puzzle. Most of the transcriptions in the old capital Pliska are translated in Celtic, but there is quite a big Pashtun/Pamirian influence, older ones are translated in Persian with Finno Ugric admixture haha.. I know - it's messy, but I'd still want to hear you backing up your post ;)

Your ancestors did but then they became the Emporers greatest and most trusted warriors - his Vanangian Guard (the Emporers Bodyguards). They fought for Byzantium for 100's of years and defended it against the Arabs until the very last. The peoples of Europe have an amazing common culture, if only we can learn to realise that and protect it - multiculturalism means all this will be wiped away within 100 years if it carries on.

Bulgarians defeated the Arabs - not the VIKINGS! The Coward Vikings retreated to God's forgotten Scandinavia. Tervel of Bulgaria against Maslama, the Caliph's brother with over 125 000 troops - Arab Invasion of Europe 717/718 AD. One of the most horrible massacres in the medieval. Look up for the Syriac Chronicle of Michael the Syrian, it will stretch your hair up ! Vikings were used against us, but they like all, felt the length of the mighty Bulgarian sword :)))
