That isn't true. While "liberals" might ideally want a country with no guns, the realist camps in the party know that outlawing guns is not only unconstitutional, but political suicide. On a local level democrats certainly are a problem (see SF) with regard to guns. But nationally, the party will NEVER outlaw gun ownership. And I love guns, my family loves guns. I believe SCOTUS made the right call in Heller v. DC. So even if you believe that, SCOTUS said they can't anyway.
