It's not a toilet plunger, it's called a mute.

Shake hands, harty - drums myself & Sonny Greer's my #4 all-time. :D Anyways, it's Joe "Tricky Sam" Nanton on the sliphorn. It's really not that difficult to get that "ya ya" sound from it - you just have to manipulate your mouth/lips as you're simultaneously using the plunger. The right coordination gives you "ya ya" instead of the regular "wa wa". I played trombone back in the 90's - took lots of practice to nail that sound. Yeah, next to Teagarden, Tricky Sam's my favorite sliphorn man.

thats the end of a toilet plunger he's using to make a "Wah Wah" sound, and then he starts saying " Yeah Yeah" to get that really raspy effect

who's the fiddler in this video?
SwingMan1937 napisał :
That's be Ray "The Show" Nance on violin, willie. His main instrument in Duke's band (1940-1946, replacing Cootie Williams) was trumpet, but he doubled on violin and, as this clip shows, took a few vocals from time to time. Anyways, that versatility is what earned him the nick "The Show".

I think it's just the mute he's using. It's so cool isn't it?
