John Francis performs his original work "Coral Sunset" for the alto-guitar May 10, 2007 at KCTU TV studios in Wichita, Kansas. This particular alto-guitar was dubbed "Carollos" by the inventor, Georg Bolin of Sweden. Bolin did not like serial numbers. He built this guitar to order, in 1984, for late American guitarist and teacher Dave Markle. The alto-guitar (altgitarr or altgitarren) has 11 nylon strings. Its top six are pitched a minor third higher than standard tuning, like the Renaissance lute. It's five extra bass strings drop diatonically as F-Eb-DC-Bb. This would be like DCBAG on a standard guitar. The extra basses are not usually fretted, but are played open. They may also be tuned to fit a particular key. "THE THUNDERBUCKET" Homemade Upright Bass Banjo
Here is our homemade upright bass banjo aka "The Thunderbucket". Made from an old marching bass drum. Apologies for the hideous intonation. Not a bass player so much. Made in Kansas ***EDIT*** A few folks have reached out about building their own. We never really had any plans for it but what I can remember went something like this: The neck and the bridge was made from a curtain valance. I believe it was maple. I cut it up, glued it, and routered the edges. The bridge was made from some scrap wood I'm not sure what it was. Held in place with the tension from the strings and some double sided tape. For strings we used regular old Weed Wacker wire and turnbuckles (at the bottom) for the tuners. Just know that because the strings are nylon they will take a while to stretch out. It took months before the Thunderbucket could hold a tuning for longer than a day or so. Also the headstock is the neck from an old broken fiddle we had around. It does nothing but hold the strings and look pretty. I you go to Winfield and wanna play this thing we camp with the Wood-N-Heads in the Pecan Grove. Come say hi. Tell em YouTube sent you.

Vanhal - Double Bass Concerto in D Major
Rinat Ibragimov, principal double bass of the London Symphony Orchestra together with Catherine Edwards, performs Jan Křtitel Vaňhal's Double Bass Concerto, originally written in Es Major but performed here a semitone lower. This popular piece of double bass repertoire is commonly called for in auditions, and here Rinat demonstrates its performance using the original bass part and the Viennese Tuning that would have been in vogue at the time of its composition. Rinat plays a d-bass by Matheus Albany, a gift from his colleague and friend Alexander Stepanov. He uses Pirastro Eudoxa strings. Lego Bass Amazing 5 String Custom Bass Guitar
This custom Bass is made from over 800 Lego bricks and uses a Carvin neck and EMG pickup. This piece is one of 13 Lego builds. The builder also uses wood in building guitars and Bass guitars. These can be purchased but are not cheap. Each piece cost's in excess of $1000 to build. The neck alone on this Bass was almost $300 from the Carvin catalog. Country Joe and The Fish - Bass Strings
About The Band: The group's name is derived from leftist politics; "Country Joe" was a popular name for Joseph Stalin in the 1940s, while "the fish" refers to Mao Tse Dung's statement that the true revolutionary must "swim among the people as a fish." The group began with the nucleus of "Country Joe" McDonald (lead vocals) and Barry "The Fish" Melton (lead guitar), recording and performing for the "Teach-In" protests against the Vietnam War in 1965. Co-founders McDonald and Melton added musicians as needed over the life of the band. By 1967, the group included Gary "Chicken" Hirsh (drums) (born in 1940, in Chicago, Illinois); David Cohen (keyboards) (born 8 April 1942, in Brooklyn, New York) and Bruce Barthol (bass) (born 11 November 1947 in Berkeley, California). The 1967 lineup lasted only two years, and by the 1969 music festival Woodstock, the lineup included Greg 'Duke' Dewey (drums), Mark Kapner (keyboards) and Doug Metzler (bass). The band came to perform an early example of psychedelic music. The LP "Electric Music for the Mind and Body" was very influential on early FM Radio in 1967. This is the wonderful tribute that Charlie Cushman did for the legendary banjo picker, Allen Shelton on 11/21/09. Charlie wanted the crowd to make sure to remember Allen in our thoughts and prayers as he had been released from the hospital this week, after a lengthy hospital stay. This morning it was announced on the Bluegrass Blog that Allen Shelton had passed away sometime yesterday. I remember this amazing song of Allen's from hearing my grandfather play it growing up. I believe Charlie did a bang-up job of a tribute and I know I will always remember that we all took a moment to send prayers and positive thoughts to Allen never dreaming we would hear the news today. Please remember Allen's family in your prayers.... So. It's been over a year since I've posted anything here... Wow. Sorry... Anyway, this is a bass and drum scratch track (mistakes and all) for a tune I'm putting together. The bass is a MVP Pedulla 5 string bass. It play like buttah. See if you can dig this groove and let me know what you think.
