1189. Lenggang Lenggang Kangkung (Traditional Indonesian)

This song from Riau is in the form of a pantun, a traditional form of verse consisting of four alternately rhyming lines (abab). The first couplet of a pantun is merely to set up a rhyme and rhythm pattern for the second couplet, which is the only meaningful part and usually seems to have nothing to do with the first two lines, though there may well be a symbolic connection. This second couplet changes from one performance to another, so there is plenty of room for improvisation. Kangkung is a popular vegetable used in Asian cooking, but the phrase "lenggang kangkung" means to relax and chill out, something Indonesians are very good at doing.
