The Computer History Museum recently honored one of the great teams in computing history when it marked the 50th anniversary of the legendary IBM 1401. The 1401 was really the first business computer, putting unprecedented computing power within the reach of a whole new range of business customers a machine packed with significant technical and business innovation. A current IBMer said it best when he remarked: ... I think of (the 1401 team) as IBMs version of the original Mercury astronauts. They were a team that thrived on challenge. They were driven by curiosity. They were devoted to meaningful innovation. And they aimed high they wanted to change the world. The 1401 will be remembered not just for the technological achievements which were groundbreaking. Not just for the impact on business which was deep. But for their impact on IBM itself." A few months before the Computer History Museum event, about 60 members of the team gathered for a reunion in Endicott, NY, where the 1401 was created. The M802 model mixer is a heavy duty 80 quart mixer with a 3 horsepower motor and an electromechanical timer as standard equipment. Other standard features include a clutch and power bowl lift. With the use of bowl adapters and special agitators, 30, 40 or 60 quart bowls may be used on the M802. This mixer is also available with a 14" higher than standard pedestal. The V1401 model mixer is a heavy duty 140 quart mixer with a 5 horsepower motor and an electromechanical timer as standard equipment. Other standard features include a clutch and power bowl lift. With the use of bowl adapters and special agitators, 30, 40, 60, 80 or 100 quart bowls may be used on the V1401. This mixer is also available with a 17" higher than standard pedestal. Bowl Guard is standard equipment on all M802 and V1401 models. Programmable Timer Controller is optional on M802 and V1401 models. These mixers can be ordered with deluxe finish, which includes chrome plated transmission case, base, bowl support, and pedestal.

A typical day at the IBM 140 Restoration Lab. Some explanation: When computers perform operations, they emit different electromagnetic frequencies at each operation. This caused RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) which means that the signals can interfere with radio transmissions. If you set a radio to white noise (between stations), you can hear this interference if the radio is close to the computer. Since the frequencies are specific to the operatino that the computer is performing, you can write a "program" which is effectively an nonsense program in terms of getting the computer to do anything, but which will generate the frequencies in the order - and of the duration - that you want to hear. That's what's going on here. The 1401 is running a looped program that generates the "music" that you hear. The IBM 1401 Restoration Project operates at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA on most Wednesdays and is made up of retired IBM CEs - and me. Stop by and visit. Looking at the photos, you are no doubt as impressed as I am with this Pontiac. This car has a beautiful QQ Verdoro Green paint with the 223 trim package which screams GTO muscle. If you�ve ever seen an old GTO, you know how hard it is to make paint stay on these early urethane pieces. No issues here. You know it's good when you can see yourself well enough to shave. All the stainless and chrome trim is gorgeous. The chrome, front and rear, is spectacular, and the stainless trim around the wheel arches and along the rocker panel has been buffed until it shines like chrome. All the lenses and badges are excellent and exact.Glass and lenses are very good all around. Adding to this GTO's muscle look are those awesome redline radials. What you�re really aching to know about is that engine under the hood, am I right? Well, how about a numbers matching WT 400 cubic inch sporting 360 horsepower. There�s nothing radical in there, but these big Ponchos are known for making big torque, and that�s exactly what this monster does. It lights off easily, idles nicely, and although the owner has driven it just enough to work out the bugs, there�s little doubt that this is a seriously fast car. And like the exterior, the engine bay is highly detailed and beautifully finished. Backing up that big block is an original-spec Muncie M21 close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission. Look carefully at those photos and you�ll see solid floors and a nicely finished chassis. Ice cold A/C, power <b>...</b>
