Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592)

www.philosophybites.com Montaigne cultivates his liberty by not adhering exclusively to any one idea, while at the same time exploring them all. In exercising his judgment on various topics, he trains himself to go off on fresh tracks, starting from something he read or experienced. For Montaigne this also means calling into question the convictions of his time, reflecting upon his beliefs and education, and cultivating his own personal thoughts. His language can be said to obey only one rule, that is, to be "an effect of sincerity," which is the very one that he demands from the pupil. His language bears an unmistakable tone but contradicts itself sometimes from one place to another, perhaps for the very reason that it follows so closely the movements of thought. If being a philosopher means being insensitive to human frailties and to the evils or to the pleasures which befall us, then Montaigne is not a philosopher. If it means using a "jargon", and being able to enter the world of scholars, then Montaigne is not one either. Yet, if being a philosopher is being able to judge properly in any circumstances of life, then the Essays are the exemplary testimony of an author who wanted to be a philosopher for good. Montaigne is putting his judgment to trial on whatever subject, in order not only to get to know its value, but also to form and strengthen it. He manages thus to offer us a philosophy in accordance with life. As Nietzsche puts it, "that such a man has written, joy <b>...</b>

FSX Simulation of the US Airways 1592 Crash Landing into NYC's Hudson River, Piloted by Captain C. Sullenberger

This animation was created using Microsoft Flight Simulator X and is a recreation of the US Airways Flight 1549 crash landing into New York City's Hudson River. The NTSB's final report won't be released for some time, but based on all the available evidence it seems clear that the Airbus A320 struck a dense flock of large birds causing catastrophic damage to both jet engines. A total loss of all power is extremely rare for modern jet aircraft. It quickly became clear that returning to La Guardia or any other nearby airport was out of the question. The only remaining option was to perform an emergency landing in the Hudson river, right next to one of the most populated cities in the world. Such water landings rarely succeed, but the Capitan Sullenberger executed the maneuver perfectly. Not only did this brave move save the lives of all 155 souls on board, but potentially scores more in the populated regions directly below the 1549's flightpath that Friday afternoon. This video is dedicated to Captain Chesley Sullenberger and the crew of flight 1549 for their heroic efforts in turning this potential tragedy into a truly amazing story. John Jenkins (1592-1678) Pavan for 2 bass viols

Julia Hodgson, Susanna Pell - Viols Fretwork - Music for Viols - Purcell, Lawes, Locke, Jenkins Virgin Classics _____________________________________________ John Jenkins, (born 1592, Maidstone, Kent, Eng. — died Oct. 27, 1678, Kimberley, Norfolk), composer, lutenist, and string player, most eminent composer in his era of music for chamber ensembles. He was musician to Charles I and Charles II and served patrons from the nobility and gentry, notably Sir Hamon L'Estrange and Lord North, whose son refers to Jenkins in his writings. His last patron was Sir Philip Wodehouse of Kimberley. Jenkins's string fantasias, or fancies, for which he was renowned, reflect the stylistic change that took place in this form during his lifetime. The earlier five-part viol fantasias are largely polyphonic, showing the influence of the earlier ricercar and canzone. His later three-part fantasias for two violins and bass are multisectional, employ homophonic passages, and illustrate the influence of the trio sonata and of Italian fashions on form and figuration. His compositions also include rounds, songs, and anthems. www.britannica.com

Cornelis Thymanszoon Padbrué (1592-1670) - Het vierde kusjen (1630/41)

Cornelis Thymanszoon Padbrué (Haarlem, c. 1592 -- Haarlem, 1670) was a Dutch composer. Biography: Padbrué came from a musical family and entered the company of "stadsspeelluiden" (city musicians) in his native city of Haarlem, but was dismissed from civic service in 1635 as a result of a long-running quarrel. From then on he supported himself as a freelance musician, and little further of his life is known. He was buried in 1670 in the Sint-Bavokerk in Haarlem. Works: Cornelis Padbrué published several collections of madrigals and motets on texts by, among others, the poets Jacob Westerbaen and Joost van der Vondel and by the Haarlem painters Salomon de Bray and Pieter de Grebber. The well-known melody from the round "'O Kerstnacht! schoonder dan de dagen", from Vondel's tragedy Gjisbrecht van Amstel is attributed to Padbrué . Moreover, there also appeared in print two instrumental Symphonias by him, consisting each of a pavane and a galliard. Padbrué's chief work was the oratorio "De tranen Petri ende Pauli" (the tears of Peter and Paul) from 1647, also on a text by Vondel. It is considered as the first northern-European oratorio, but unfortunately not all of the work has survived. Padbrué showed all sorts of international influences, and at most levels his works were different from others produced at that time, but the expression of the words or the "madrigalism" was always the most important factor for him. The present madrigal is a Dutch translation of one of the <b>...</b>

Uniors pneumatic hammers with controlled torque allow fast screwing and can handle also the most hard-to-handle nuts and rusty screws. The basic functions of pneumatic hammers - they all enable torque adjustment and determination of the direction of the rotation, but differ in the maximum torque, way of regulation (selector switch or toggle button) and the maximum size of sockets. They are universal and can therefore be used in different types of mounting where maximum torques are needed and in mounting of larger joints. They are becoming more and more popular also for home use.
