The French in action in Algeria The poem "Ich hatt' einen Kameraden" was written in Tübingen, in the Kingdom of Württemberg, by Johann Ludwig Uhland. In 1809, the Kingdom of Württemberg stood at the side of Napoleon, the Emperor of the French, whose troops were involved, with those of the Bavarians, in the repression of the Tyroleans. Württemberg, then a satellite of the French Empire, was ruled by King Frederick I of Württemberg. Uhland's moving, intimate and simple poem expresses friendship and loyalty in the battle. The poem hardly had any patriotic significance. The poem had been written while a war was going on in which German Bavarians were fighting other Germans, Tyroleans; this to the benefit of their ally, the French Empire.
