This Race Horse was the first Film ever, filmed in 1878 by Edward Muybridge. Eadweard J. Muybridge (pronounced /ˌɛdwərd ˈmaɪbrɪdʒ/; 9 April 1830 -- 8 May 1904) was an English photographer who spent much of his life in the United States. He is known for his pioneering work on animal locomotion which used multiple cameras to capture motion, and his zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip. By 1878, Muybridge had successfully photographed a horse in fast motion. This series of photos taken in Palo Alto, California, is called Sallie Gardner at a Gallop or The Horse in Motion, and shows that the hooves do all leave the ground — although not with the legs fully extended forward and back, as contemporary illustrators tended to imagine, but rather at the moment when all the hooves are tucked under the horse as it switches from "pushing" with the back legs to "pulling" with the front legs. In time, Kruger emerged as a leader. He started as a field cornet in the commandos, eventually becoming Commandant-General of the South African Republic. He was appointed member of a commission of the Volksraad, the republican parliament that was to draw up a constitution. Augustus John was celebrated first for his brilliant figure drawings, and then for a new technique of oil sketching. His work was favourably compared in London with that of Gauguin and Matisse. He then developed a style of portraiture that was imaginative and often extravagant, catching an instantaneous attitude in his subjects. Flamboyant bohemian artist Augustus Edwin John was born in Tenby, Pembrokeshire in January 1878. The younger son and third of four children in the John family, Augustus attended the Slade School of Art in London in 1894 (until 1899), and was joined there a year later by his older sister Gwen. The pair shared lodgings during their time at the school. In 1897 Augustus suffered a serious head injury whilst diving into the sea that affected a change in his character, and critics have argued, resulted in the stimulation of his artistic growth. In 1898 he won the Slade Summer Composition prize with Moses and the Brazen Serpent, and after his graduation from the school he studied in France. Early in 1900 Augustus married Ida Nettleship and they had five children together. The Victoria Ground 1878 - 1997 When Stoke City said goodbye to the Victoria Ground in May 1997 they bought to an end a stay of over 119 years stretching back to March 1878. The Victoria Ground played host to its final league game against West Bromwich Albion on the last day of the 1996/97 season. As a coincidence the first ever league game to take place at the Vic had also been against Albion, this back on the 8th September 1888 in front of 4500 in which Stoke lost by two goals to nil. We signed off from the last encounter with victory, winning 2-1 in front of a 22500 crowd. A grand old football ground, it joins the likes of Roker Park, The Baseball Ground and Ayresome Park, now long gone, but it will forever be remembered in the hearts and minds of supporters. A piece of world history in all its static, primitive glory! "The Experimental Talking Clock was recorded circa 1878 by inventor Frank Lambert. It was long thought to be the world's oldest playable sound recording and is listed in both the Guinness Book of World Records and The Encyclopedia of Recorded Sound as such; however, an older phonautogram recording from 1857 by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville was reproduced for the first time in 2008 with the aid of modern technology. It is still the oldest recording that can be played back with its own mechanism, without the involvement of digital technology. Unlike modern recordings, the recording medium of the Experimental Talking Clock is a part of the primitive recording device itself and cannot be easily changed. Seeking to create a more durable recording, Lambert chose to experiment with a cylinder made of lead rather than the more common practice of recording onto a wrapping of tin foil. Lasting 1 minute 40 seconds, the hand-cranked recording features an assortment of peculiar sounds, from Lambert calling out the hours of the day to indistinct speech and what may be chimes or bells. Portions of the recording sound in reverse, which raises the possibility that the phonograph may have been cranked counter-clockwise during certain points of recording. A few years ago the Northern Command, NORTHCOM was formed within the Defense Department (previously known as The War Department). This group was formed to handle domestic situations involving terrorism with a force of about 2000. As reported by The Washington Post and reprinted in The Dallas Morning News, President Bush authorized the strength of this group to increase to 20000 by 20111.
