San Francisco 1905 - 1906 (short form)

In 1905, an unknown cameraman filmed a streetcar trip along San Francisco's Market Street. The following year, the Great Earthquake struck, and he filmed the trip again. This is a five-minute silent film that edits together excerpts of his two films. Footage from the Prelinger Archives, edited by Matt Lake

San Francisco Earthquake 1906 - Before and After Journey Down Market Street

Here is a side-by-side comparison of two filmed journeys down Market Street shot in April of 1906 sourced from the Prelinger Archives at www.archive.org. The video on the left has enjoyed wide circulation online, but has often been incorrectly dated to 1905. Subsequent research by Historian David Kiehn of the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, has determined that the footage was actually shot by Harry and Herbert Miles on April 14th, 1906, only 4 days before the catastrophic event and subsequent fires leveled much of the city, resulting in conditions depicted in the video on the right, and of which the initial production source is unknown. Both of these files are an extraction from longer source footage available from the Prelinger Archives. Some of that footage has been omitted from this presentation due to substantially poor presentation quality of the source content. Both files were adjusted to correct original capture timing, and the video on the right was horizontally flipped to correct the reversed-image version currently found in the Archives. These videos are also presented with only an approximate rudimentary synchronization of imagery. More precise synchronization has proven elusive due to differences in speed of travel, position of camera in relation to surroundings, dynamics of original imaging optics, and retention of content. As close as possible, the intent has been to show the structures and landmarks on the left in contrast with the devastation of the ...

San Francisco Earthquake and Fire April 18, 1906

The California earthquake of April 18, 1906 ranks as one of the most significant earthquakes of all time. Today, its importance comes more from the wealth of scientific knowledge derived from it than from its sheer size. Rupturing the northernmost 296 miles (477 kilometers) of the San Andreas fault from northwest of San Juan Bautista to the triple junction at Cape Mendocino, the earthquake confounded contemporary geologists with its large, horizontal displacements and great rupture length. Indeed, the significance of the fault and recognition of its large cumulative offset would not be fully appreciated until the advent of plate tectonics more than half a century later. Analysis of the 1906 displacements and strain in the surrounding crust led Reid (1910) to formulate his elastic-rebound theory of the earthquake source, which remains today the principal model of the earthquake cycle. This footage is some of the earliest known from a natural disaster. Lost Film From 1906

San Francisco, 1906. Turn up the volume and travel back in time! This film was "lost" for many years. It was the first 35mm film ever. It was taken by camera mounted on the front of a cable car. The number of automobiles is staggering for 1906. Notice that all the cars apparently have their steering wheels on the right side. The clock tower at the end of Market Street at the Embarcadero wharf is still there. (I'm also wondering ... how many "street cleaning" people were employed to pick up after the horses? (Talk about going green!) And no traffic lights, no cross walks, no painted lanes, no road signs, no cell phones - yet folks seemed to survive okay..........& obviously no pedestrian or driving rules or laws. Notice how much better dressed they were in 1906.This film, originally thought to be from 1905, until David Kiehn, with the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, figured out exactly when it was shot. From New York trade papers announcing the film showing to the wet streets from recent heavy rainfall & shadows indicating time of year & actual weather and conditions on historical record, even when the cars were registered (he even knows who owned them and when the plates were issued!). It was filmed only four days before the quake and shipped by train to NY for processing. Amazing but true!

London Hospital (Casualty 1906) part 1/6

Casualty 1906 is an innovative hospital drama that plunges the viewer into the Receiving Room (today's A&E) of the London hospital deep in the teeming East End. The drama is shot with the pace and action of its modern day counterpart and namesake, Casualty, but every case and character is true. Focusing on cases, characters and events taken from the actual hospital records, nurse's Ward Diaries and intimate memoirs, 'Casualty 1906' is an unbroken experience of life with pioneering doctors and nurses a hundred years ago among the desperately poor. STREET CARS SAN FRANCISCO, 1906 & 1941

AMAZING FILMS WHICH CHRONICLES THE LIFE ON MARKET STREET IN SAN FRANCISCO IN 1906. THE CARS AND WAGONS ARE DRIVEN WITHOUT REGARD FOR PEDESTRIANS OR OTHER VEHICLES. YOUNG BOYS RUN IN THE STREET AND JUMP ON THE BACKS OF MOVING CARS. THE DEVASTATING DESTRUCTION OF THE EARTHQUAKE OF 1906 INCLUDING ARMY & MARINE ARMED GUARDS TO PREVENT LOOTING. THE ONCE PROUD & VIBRANT MARKET STREET HAS BEEN GUTTED BY THE EFFECTS OF THE EARTHQUAKE. FINALLY A BRIEF COLORFUL LOOK AT MARKET STREET IN 1941. A RARE GLIMPSE INTO ONE STREET'S LIFE OVER 35 YEARS. It should be noted that the driver of the car with the license plate of what appears to be #4867 is more than likely Harry Miles of the Miles Bros. who shot this film. He would be one of the first film makers to place himself anonymously in his own movies similar to the way Alfred Hitchcock did. The Miles Bros. had just built the first fully functioning and equipped motion picture studio and were set to start cranking out films and distributing them the way films are done today. Unfortunately, the earthquake and fire devastated and destroyed all the equipment, plans, and photos of the studio. Less than 2 years later Harry, who was the creative mind behind the Miles Bros. is believed to have taken his own life leaping from his New York apt. building. A fantastic trip to the past. This film is incredible at showing all of the nuances of daily life over 100 years ago.

Enrico Caruso (1906) - La Bohème: Che gelida manina

From 11th February 1906, NY. This appears to be the only recording of Che gelida manina Caruso ever did. Transposed down a semi-tone to G - Caruso was at the time not comfortable with high notes. You may want to look at my website for more Caruso info: www.enrocicaruso.dk (English and Danish). An anecdote The Australian soprano Nellie Melba was notorius for her ruthlessness and coldness. Performing with her in La Bohème Caruso, as a joke, pressed a hot sausage into her hand that he'd hidden in his pocket as he sang "Che gelida manina, se la lasci riscaldar."("What a cold little hand, let me warm it"). She had considered Caruso coarse and uncultivated and this, of course, only confirmed that ... Rodolfo's aria from Puccini's opera La Bohème. Italian text: Che gelida manina, se la lasci riscaldar. An Indian Washing the Baby (1906)

Baby massage might only recently have made it big in North London, but it has a very long tradition in India. Just after birth the baby is massaged with a dough ball dipped in oil to expel toxins, aid digestion and improve circulation. Massage with the hands begins when the baby is one month old and can continue for over 18 months, ensuring that the baby's limbs are supple and skin is soft. Traditionally, the baby would be massaged on its mother's legs, as seen in this film. (Robin Baker) This film is part of 'Before Midnight' - a touring programme of 27 films shot in India prior to Independence.
