Oradea in 1919 on Chopin's Etude Op. 10 No. 3 in E major 'Tristesse'

Images of Oradea, Romania, in 1919. This movie is about the beauty of a city, to which contributed through the centuries many nations that together lived here, cherished peace, and made a sacrifice of creation: Romanians, Hungarians, Rromas, Italians, Jews, Germans, and many more. No need for xenophobic discussions and comments that lead nowhere. I will delete all kinds of nationalist comments. The music is the beautiful Etude Op. 10, No. 3 in E flat major 'Tristesse' by Frederic Chopin, highly regarded as a quality manifestation of Chopin's love for Romantic Opera and Poland, where he was born. During a lesson with his pupil Adolf Gutmann, the latter began weeping and cried, "Oh, my homeland!". Chopin was said to have also noted this piece as the most intimate piece he has ever composed, stating that "In all my life I have never again been able to find such a beautiful melody."

The Polish-Bolshevik War 1919-1921

Until 1989, while communists held power in a People's Republic of Poland, the Polish-Soviet War was omitted or minimized in Polish and other Soviet bloc countries' history books, or was presented as foreign intervention during the Russian Civil War to fit in with communist ideology. One of the most easily overlooked, yet momentous short wars of the 20th century was the swift-moving clash between the post-World War I Polish Republic and Russias brand-new Bolshevik regime of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. Reaching a climax during the summer of 1920, the Russo-Polish War is often regarded as the final episode of the Russian Civil War. In fact, it was much more — at once a reflection of the age-old enmity between two Slavic neighbors and a Marxist crusade bent on varying the torch of revolution into the heart of Europe. The campaign featured a remarkable cast of characters on both sides and mixed ferocious cavalry charges with early blitzkrieg tactics in quest of exceptional objectives.Bolshevik commanders in the Red Army's coming offensive would include Leon Trotsky, Mikhail Tukhachevsky (new commander of the Western Front), the future Soviet ruler Joseph Stalin and the founder of the Cheka (secret police)Feliks Dzierżyński. Germany and France were war weary and were experiencing problems such as unemployment and general economic disruption. Lenin already had political agitators in those countries, but in order for his Revolution to succeed he would need the presence of a military ...

Calliope Band Organ in 1919 Chevrolet

I built this calliope in 1995 with parts sourced from a music shop and a player piano/band organ company. It's become a regular fixture, playing at many local shows and displays ever since. Operating with the 'O' roll nickelodeon format, the music arrangements work quite well for this application. The auto is a 1919 Chevrolet 490 ("Four-Ninety") Light Delivery, a seven year restoration project done with much help from my pop, who taught me how to 'wrench'.

1919 Buick First start since 1952

This is the first startup of this 1919 buick six roadster that had been sitting in a barn in ohio since 1952. It was parked there with a bad differential. My boss bought it on Ebay and i gently disassembled the engine, cleaned out the 50+ year old oil, freed up the piston rings and put it back together. I had to substitute a newer coil to get a strong spark and had manually filled the float bowl of the carburetor. No fuel pump was hooked up or water in the engine hence the short run time. This is a very cool early overhead valve engine with an aluminum crankcase, cast iron cylinder block, roller tappets, exposed valvetrain, zero gap piston rings, and electric start. This car had about 14000 miles on the odometer. Enjoy the video! Check out my other video/slide show for engine disassembly pictures.

Antique Indian Motorcycle 1919 Power Plus

This is a 1919 Indian Power Plus with the rare "airless" tire option. This video was taken in 1991 nearly 30 years after it had last been started. The owner at that time was one of the original founders of the Shakey's Pizza chain here in the Pacific Northwest. He obtained it around 1961 or so and never tried to start or ride it. He had seen Indian Jeff riding his old bikes around the area and asked him if he could take a look at it and see what it needed to bring her back to life. Jeff cleaned the carb & mag points, put in some fresh gas & oil and it fired up on the third kick! What you see here is Jeff riding the old Power Plus just a few minutes later for the first time in 30+ years! Original tires that would not hold air and a leather patch stitched over a bad section on the front one. After the short "test" ride he did replace the tubes and re-stitched the front patch and then went out for a longer test ride. After draining the excess oil from the crankcase it stopped smoking and ran perfectly! Some new tires and a little grease here and there was all it required. Try that with a Honda after nearly 75 years and 30 of those just sitting! Ride um, don't hide um!
Excelsior 1919 Boardtrack racer ohc.wmv

Excelsior 1919 Boardtrack Racer. The captain of the Excelsior racing team, Bob Perry had a special relationship with the Schwinn family. Ignaz Schwinn, the owner of the Excelsior Motorcycle Company envisioned Perry as a future executive in the company and did not want him to race, but Perry wanted to race and was on hand to ride one of the new 1919 61 cu.in. OHC machines in its debut at Ascot Park, Ca. on January 4, 1920. The Excelsior team arrived early for testing and discovered that the extremely powerful new engine performed like it could fulfill Schwinn's hopes for a racer that would beat the Indian and Harley-Davidson works machines. On January 3 it was announced that Bob Perry would ride the Excelsior on full throttle around the Ascot oval. He crashed and was killed when he lost control entering a turn at a speed estimated between 95 and 100 miles per hour. "Schwinn was devastated. The Excelsior team withdrew from the Ascot event, and Ignaz Schwinn went into the racing shop and personally destroyed all of the overhead cam engines with a sledge hammer. Not one of the machines survived. This 1919 Excelsior Boardtrack racer was carefully recreated by Paul Brodie, using 6 known photographs of several of the original machines. Ben Selvin's Novelty Orchestra - Dardanella (1919)

Ben Selvin (March 5,1898 - July 15,1980), son of Russian-immigrant Jewish parents, was a musician, bandleader, record producer and innovator in recorded music. He was known as The Dean of Recorded Music. Selvin started his professional life at age 15 as a fiddle player in New York City night clubs. A "husky" lad, he looked older than he was and as such was permitted into such establishments. A mere six years later, as leader of his own dance band, the "Novelty Orchestra," Selvin released the biggest-selling popular song in the first quarter-century of recorded music. That single, Dardanella, eventually went on to sell more than 5 million copies and an additional 2 million pieces of sheet music. During the Columbia era, he recorded under many different names including "The Broadway Nightlites", "The Knickerbockers", "The Columbians", "The Cavaliers", "Barney Trimble and his Oklahomans", "Perley Stevens and his Orchestra", "Jerry Mason and his Californians", "The Harmonians", "Rudy Marlow and his Orchestra", "Columbia Photo Players", "Frank Auburn and his Orchestra", "Kolster Dance Orchestra", "Lloyd Keating and his Music", "Earl Marlow and his Orchestra", "Ed Loyd and his Orchestra", "Ray Seeley and his Orchestra", "Sam Nash and his Orchestra", "Mickie Alpert and his Orchestra", "Johnny Walker and his Orchestra", "Chester Leighton and his Sophomores", "Wally Edwards and his Orchestra", "Roy Carroll and his Sands Point Orchestra", "Buddy Campbell and his Orchestra", "Golden ...
