Bobby Darin - Mack The Knife - 1959

Bobby Darin (May 14, 1936 -- December 20, 1973), born Walden Robert Cassotto, was an American singer, actor and musician. Darin performed in a range of music genres, including pop, rock, jazz, folk and country. Although unknown to the public, his health was dangerously fragile and strongly motivated him to succeed within the limited lifetime he feared he would, and ultimately did, have. In 1960 after romancing singer Connie Francis, and being run out of the house by her strict Italian father, with a shotgun, breaking her heart, Darin married "Gidget" actress Sandra Dee, whom he met while making his first film Come September (1961). They made a few more movies together at Universal Studios that were moderately successful. They had one son, Dodd Mitchell Darin (also known as Morgan Mitchell Darin) before divorcing in 1967. He was also an actor, singer/songwriter and music business entrepreneur. His wish for a legacy was "to be remembered as a human being and as a great performer." Among his many other contributions, he became a goodwill ambassador for the American Heart Association.

NASA X-15 Hypersonic Research at the Edge of Space

airboyd.tv This joint program by NASA, the Air Force, the Navy, and North American operated the most remarkable of all the rocket research aircraft. Composed of an internal structure of titanium and a skin surface of a chrome-nickel alloy known as Inconel X, the X-15 had its first, unpowered glide flight on June 8, 1959, while the first powered flight took place on September 17, 1959. Because of the large fuel consumption of its rocket engine, the X-15 was air launched from a B-52 aircraft at about 45000 ft and speeds upward of 500 mph. The airplane first set speed records in the Mach 4-6 range with Mach 4.43 on March 7, 1961; Mach 5.27 on June 23, 1961; Mach 6.04 on November 9, 1961; and Mach 6.7 on October 3, 1967. It also set an altitude record of 354200 feet (67 miles) on August 22, 1963, and provided an enormous wealth of data on hypersonic air flow, aerodynamic heating, control and stability at hypersonic speeds, reaction controls for flight above the atmosphere, piloting techniques for reentry, human factors, and flight instrumentation. The highly successful program contributed to the development of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo piloted spaceflight programs as well as the Space Shuttle program. The program's final flight was performed on October 24, 1968.

Bugs Bunny - A Witch's Tangled Hare (1959)

A Witch's Tangled Hare is a 1959 Warner Bros. Looney Tunes theatrical cartoon short directed by Abe Levitow. In this cartoon Mel Blanc plays voice roles for Bugs Bunny, while June Foray voices Witch Hazel. The cartoon makes many references to various plays by William Shakespeare (Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and As You Like It). PLOT The cartoon opens with the poet, who looks similar to William Shakespeare, trying to write and coming across a castle with a mailbox with "Macbeth" written on it. At this he begins to write a story based on this title. He hears the loud screeching laugh of Witch Hazel and watches her stir her cauldron. The witch has Bugs Bunny trapped, sleeping on a platter and wakes him up. He believes the cauldron to be a bath and readily climbs in, only realising his mistake after reading her open recipe book. He quickly jumps out of the boiling cauldron and runs away from Witch Hazel, towards the castle, when she tries to attack him with a meat cleaver. Witch Hazel pursues Bugs Bunny on her flying broomstick. We then see the poet again trying to write after Bugs and the witch have departed.

1959 First EVER Barbie Commercial

This is the first Barbie commercial that first aired during Mickey Mouse Club! Ruth Handler watched her daughter Barbara at play with paper dolls, and noticed that she often enjoyed giving them adult roles. At the time, most children's toy dolls were representations of infants. Realizing that there could be a gap in the market, Handler suggested the idea of an adult-bodied doll to her husband Elliot, a co-founder of the Mattel toy company. He was unenthusiastic about the idea, as were Mattel's directors. During a trip to Europe in 1956 with her children Barbara and Kenneth, Ruth Handler came across a German toy doll called Bild Lilli. The adult-figured Lilli doll was like what Handler had in mind, so she purchased three of them. She gave one to her daughter and took the others back to Mattel. The Lilli doll was based on a popular character appearing in a comic strip drawn by Reinhard Beuthin for the newspaper Die Bild-Zeitung. Upon her return to the United States, Handler reworked the design of the doll (with help from engineer Jack Ryan) and the doll was given a name, Barbie, after Handler's daughter Barbara. The doll made its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York on March 9, 1959. This date is also used as Barbie's official birthday. Mattel acquired the rights to the Bild Lilli doll in 1964 and production of Lilli was stopped. The first Barbie doll wore a black and white zebra striped swimsuit and signature topknot ponytail, and was available as ...

Harpo Marx & Milton Berle 1959 Kraft Music Hall

Harpo Marx clowns with Uncle Miltie on The Kraft Music Hall starring Milton Berle broadcast January 14, 1959. Billy May conducts the orchestra (May was Frank Sinatra's arranger before Nelson Riddle.) This is comedy and music the likes of which you'll never see again. Harpo makes surprising fun of cocaine and heroin use in 1959! (And keep an eye on Uncle Miltie's left hand after Harpo plays the clarinet, as he prompts Harpo with a prop.) These two old pros are simply the best.

The Earls - Remember Then - 1959 Doo Wop

Listen LIVE to RadioCarino - audiorealm.com Larry Chance and the Earls were a popular recording group from the 1960s formed in The Bronx, New York. In 1962, their single "Remember Then" was a hit, and "Life Is But a Dream," "Never" and "I Believe" also charted. As the oldies revival scene started a strong run in the early 1970s and 1980s, the Earls became one of the most requested groups in the doo-wop genre. They are still actively performing and remain on the oldies circuit.

Senor Blues Silver Horace 1959

Senor Blues Silver Horace 1959 In the fifties and sixties the Netherlands as well as the Scandinavian countries had an enormous attraction for American jazz musicians. It appeared that they were much more appreciated and also, there were no racial barriers for so many to overcome in their homeland. We see here a clip with the Horace Silver Quintet in 1959 recorded, in what looks to me the Singer Theatre in Laren, about 15 minutes on a bicycle from my home in Bussum. In 1951, Horace Silver (born in 1929) moved to New York City where he accompanied saxophonists Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young and many other legends. In the following year, he met the executives at Blue Note while working as a sideman for saxophonist Lou Donaldson. This meeting led to Silver signing with the label where he would remain until 1980. He also collaborated with Art Blakey in forming the Jazz Messengers during the early 1950s (which Blakey would continue to lead after Silver formed his own quintet in 1956). During these years, Silver helped create the rhythmically forceful branch of jazz known as "hard bop" He based much of his own writing on blues and gospel---the latter is particularly prominent on one of his biggest tunes, "The Preacher." While his compositions at this time featured surprising tempo shifts and a range of melodic ideas, they immediately caught the attention of a wide audience. Silver's own piano playing easily shifted from aggressively percussive to lushly romantic within just a ...

Gidget (1959) Part 1/10

The original Gidget film, starring Sandra Dee, James Darren, and Cliff Robertson, about a teenage girl who falls in love with surfing against the inclinations of her friends and the reservations of the all-male surf crowd. Based on the books by Frederick Kohner, in turn based on the life of his daughter KathyKohner. Though it led to the saturation of the film industry with beach movies in the 1960's, the movie still stands out because of its innocence and beautiful scenery. The theme song is also catchy.
