Snow (1963)

(Viewers are advised to use the 'watch in high quality' option for this video). 'Snow' is available to buy as part of the BFI DVD 'Geoffrey Jones: The Rhythm of Film' - filmstore.bfi.org.uk Comprising train and track footage quickly shot just before a heavy winter's snowfall was melting, the award-winning classic that emerged from the cutting-room compresses British Rail's dedication to blizzard-battling into a thrilling eight-minute montage cut to music. Tough-as-boots workers struggling to keep the line clear are counterpointed with passengers' buffet-car comforts. In a mere half-dozen films released between 1959 and 1975, director Geoffrey Jones revealed himself as an outstanding talent, embracing industrial filmmaking as consistent with a personal style, blending movement and sound into a joyous, rhythmic whole. Brilliantly aided by Wolfgang Suschitzky's shimmering camerawork, the Oscar-nominated 'Snow' is Jones' masterpiece. It's crisply invigorating enough to induce brief amnesia about our trains' notorious inability to cope with the white stuff - then and now. November 22, 1963 Reaction to President Kennedy's death.

This was the evening of November 22, 1963. On this part there is much reaction to the assassination of President Kennedy(which was a little less than 5 hours before this report). Chet Huntley introduces a segment about the events of the day, starting with reaction of a crowd of people near reporter Gabe Pressman's car in New York City. Later there are scenes of the motorcade and events in Dallas. Dave Wiegman's famous footage is seen with other film of the motorcade. An interview of Charles Brehm is also on this youtube entry. After the interview of Charles Brehm is a political reaction by Chet Huntley on the events of the day. Scenes of Washington are next on this clip. And last on this entry is a comment on the reaction of Senator Edward Kennedy on the shooting of his brother. Senator Jennings Randolph of West Virginia is seen at the end of the clip.

LYRICS: Oh, what a night Late December back in sixty-three What a very special time for me As I remember what a night. Oh, what a night You know I didn't even know her name But I was never gonna be the same What a lady, what a night. Oh I, I got a funny feelin' when she walked in the room Yeah my, as I recall it ended much too soon. Oh, what a night Hypnotizin', mesmerizing me She was ev'rything I dreamed she'd be Sweet surrender, what a night. I felt a rush like a rollin' ball of thunder Spinnin' my head around 'n' takin' my body under Oh what a night. Oh I, I got a funny feelin' when she walked in the room Yeah my, as I recall it ended much too soon. Oh what a night, why'd it take so long to see the light Seemed so wrong, but now it seems so right What a lady, what a night. Oh, I felt a rush like a rollin' ball of thunder Spinnin' my head around 'n' takin' my body under Oh what a night (do do do do do, do do do do do) Oh what a night (do do do do do, do do do do do) Oh what a night (do do do do do, do do do do do) Oh what a night (do do do do do, do do do do do PROPERTY OF WARNER MUSIC GROUP. The Singing Nuns - "Dominique" (1963)

The song is in French. The following link is the English conversion. www.allthelyrics.com Jeanine Deckers (October 17 1933) - (March 29 1985), better known in English as The Singing Nun, was a Belgian nun, and a member (as Sister Luc Gabriel) of the Dominican Fichermont Convent in Belgium. She became internationally famous in 1963 as Soeur Sourire (Sister Smile) when she scored a hit with the song "Dominique". In the English language world, she is mostly referred to as "The Singing Nun". Born Jeanne-Paule Marie Deckers, she was a nun in the Dominican Fichermont Convent in Waterloo, Belgium. While in the convent, she wrote, sang and performed her own songs, which were so well received by the order and at retreats that the monastery decided to let her record an album, which visitors and retreatists to the monastery would be able to purchase. In 1963, the album was recorded in Brussels at Philips. The single "Dominique" became an international hit. Many radio stations in the US played it and other softer hits more often in the wake of the John F. Kennedy assassination. Overnight, the Dominican nun was an international celebrity with the stage name of Soeur Sourire (Sister Smile). She gave concerts and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show on 5 January 1964. As of November 2009[update], "Dominique" is the only Belgian song that has ever been a number one hit single in the United States. In 1966, a movie called The Singing Nun was made about her, starring Debbie Reynolds in the ...

Allan Sherman - Hello Muddah Hello Faddah (1963)

Great novelty song from Allan Sherman. LYRICS BELOW. Hello Muddah, hello Fadduh, Here I am at Camp Grenada Camp is very entertaining and they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining. I went hiking with Joe Spivy He developed poison ivy You remember Leonard Skinner He got ptomaine poisoning last night after dinner. All the counselors hate the waiters And the lake has alligators And the head coach wants no sissies So he reads to us from something called Ulysses. Now I don't want this should scare ya But my bunkmate has malaria You remember Jeffrey Hardy They're about to organize a searching party. Take me home, oh muddah fadduh, take me home, I hate Grenada Don't leave me out in the forest where I might get eaten by a bear. Take me home, I promise I will not make noise or mess the house with other boys, oh please don't make me stay, I've been here one whole day. Dearest fadduh, darling muddah, How's my precious little bruddah? Let me come home if ya miss me I will even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me. Wait a minute, it stopped hailing, Guys are swimming, guys are sailing, Playing baseball, gee that's better, Muddah Fadduh please disregard this letter.

"There is another widespread legend, the fear that fallout spells death to all life on earth. The plain fact is that even if a great number of nuclear weapons were exploded, the resulting fallout would cover only a small area of the world's total land mass." "The real concern is this . . . how do we protect ourselves?" "If there is a nuclear attack and you survive the initial explosion, you will have at least a half hour to get to a public or home fallout shelter." La Jetée.Chris Marker.(1963) 1/3

Directed by Chris Marker (inspiration for Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys) La Jetee's Script pt.1 This is the story of a man, marked by an image from his childhood. The violent scene that upsets him, and whose meaning he was to grasp only years later, happened on the main jetty at Orly, the Paris airport, sometime before the outbreak of World War III. Orly, Sunday. Parents used to take their children there to watch the departing planes. On this particular Sunday, the child whose story we are telling was bound to remember the frozen sun, the setting at the end of the jetty, and a woman's face. Nothing sorts out memories from ordinary moments. Later on they do claim remembrance when they show their scars. That face he had seen was to be the only peacetime image to survive the war. Had he really seen it? Or had he invented that tender moment to prop up the madness to come? The sudden roar, the woman's gesture, the crumpling body, and the cries of the crowd on the jetty blurred by fear. Later, he knew he had seen a man die. And sometime after came the destruction of Paris. Many died. Some believed themselves to be victors. Others were taken prisoner. The survivors settled beneath Chaillot, in an underground network of galleries. Above ground, Paris, as most of the world, was uninhabitable, riddled with radioactivity. The victors stood guard over an empire of rats. The prisoners were subjected to experiments, apparently of great concern to those who conducted them. The outcome was ...

Ivan Sutherland : Sketchpad Demo (1/2)

This video is a TV show made about the software Ivan Sutherland developed in his 1963 thesis at MIT's Lincoln Labs, "Sketchpad, A Man-Machine Graphical Communication System", described as one of the most influential computer programs ever written. This work was seminal in Human-Computer Interaction, Graphics and Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs), Computer Aided Design (CAD), and contraint/object-oriented programming. While watching this video, remember that the TX-2 computer (built circa 1958) on which the software ran was built from discrete transistors (not integrated circuits -it was room-sized) and contained just 64K of 36-bit words (~272k bytes).
