1967 Arab-Israeli War - part 1/6

The Six-Day War, also known as the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, the Third Arab-Israeli War, Six Days' War, an‑Naksah (The Setback), or the June War, was fought between Israel and Arab neighbors Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. The nations of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria also contributed troops and arms to the Arab forces. In May 1967, Egypt's president Nasser expelled the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) from the Sinai Peninsula. The peacekeeping force had been stationed there since 1957, following a British-French-Israeli invasion which was launched during the Suez Crisis. Egypt amassed 1000 tanks and nearly 100000 soldiers on the border and closed the Straits of Tiran to all ships flying Israeli flags or carrying strategic materials, receiving strong support from other Arab countries. On June 5, 1967, Israel launched a pre-emptive attack against Egypt's airforce. Jordan, which had signed a mutual defence treaty with Egypt on May 30, then attacked western Jerusalem and Netanya. At the war's end, Israel had gained control of the Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. The results of the war affect the geopolitics of the region to this day. Source: Wikipedia

The Young Rascals - Groovin' 1967

Eddie Brigati (vocals), Felix Cavaliere (keyboard, vocals), Gene Cornish (guitar) and Dino Danelli (drums) started the band in New Jersey. Their first two singles were covers, but after that the band's songwriting team of Brigati and Cavaliere began providing most of their songs, and the hits kept coming for the next two years. "I've Been Lonely Too Long" & "You Better Run", were only modest hits, but "Groovin'" (#1 US/Canada, 1967) put them at the top of the charts on both sides of the pond. The song was very different from the Rascals' normal style, enough so that Atlantic Records head Jerry Wexler did not actually want to release it. It was the only hit the Rascals had in the UK. The Young Rascals were particularly popular in the second half of the '60's and the band's influence on aspiring white R&B acts was without equal. Many groups attempted to capture the Rascals' attitude and energy. Vanilla Fudge, the epitome of over-the-top funky psychedelia, among many others, owed much to the Rascals'.

Neil Diamond, 'Cherry Cherry' (circa 1967)

READ THIS: Dennis Morgan began working with Neil when he ran the San Francisco office for MCA/Universal Music Group. Neil appeared regularly at the Circle Star Theatre in San Mateo. And they were the most sought after highly prized 'ticket-comps' Morgan had in his promotion arsenal for use with the radio and press crowd. Truth be told, he probably generated more airplay and press in the Bay Area for other--more needy Universal recording artists by leveraging Neil Diamond concert tix. From the 1960s to the 1980s, Neil was one the more successful rock music performers, scoring an extraordinary number of charted hits. Morgan recalls how distressed his mentors at Uni Records were (Russ Regan, Pat Pipilo, and Rick Frio) when Neil decided to leave the label and sign with Columbia Records/Sony Music. At the time, there may have been a turf battle underway in the corporate suite--especially after the late Artie Mogul and his A&R staff headed by Don Shane signed Andy Kim (Sugar, Sugar) who had reinvented himself in the image of Neil Diamond with the mid-chart hit single, 'Rock Me Gently'. In the end, Columbia Records won simply by making an offer Neil couldn't refuse. As critic William Ruhlmann once wrote: "Neil Diamond claims worldwide record sales of over 140 million copies, and he was ranked third, behind only Elton John and Barbara Streisand." Neil's songs have been recorded by a vast array of performers from all musical genres. He posted the 'Cherry Cherry' video as a ...

Dionne Warwick I Say A Little Prayer 1967 Original Million Seller

Dionne Warwick's 1967 single I Say A Little Prayer was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and recorded at A&R Studios in Manhattan in June 1966. Engineering the recording was the legendary Phil Ramone who would later produce Billy Joel and many others. Bacharach arranged, conducts and is on piano. The tune was released as single in October 1967 after DJs all over the country started playing the album cut from the Windows of the World album. I Say A Little Prayer was certified RIAA Gold selling over 1 million copies and peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in December 1967. The flip or B side (Theme from Valley of the Dolls), sung by Warwick in the motion picture, was also a million seller and rode the #2 position for 4 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in February 1968 and hit # 1 on the Record World Chart the same month. I Say A Little Prayer/(Theme From) Valley of the Dolls is one of the most successful double sided hits of the Rock era. This is the rare unedited version in which Burt Bacharach can be heard on count off. I Say A Little Prayer was also the first RIAA certified million seller for Bacharach and David. Less than one year later, Aretha Franklin would take her cover of "I Say A Little Prayer" to the #10 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart.
