Nineteen Eighty-Four is a classic dystopian novel by English author George Orwell. Published in 1949, it is set in the eponymous year and focuses on a repressive, totalitarian regime. The story follows the life of one seemingly insignificant man, Winston Smith, a civil servant assigned the task of falsifying records and political literature, thus effectively perpetuating propaganda, who grows disillusioned with his meagre existence and so begins a rebellion against the system. The novel has become famous for its portrayal of surveillance and society's increasing encroachment on the rights of the individual. Since its publication the terms Big Brother and Orwellian have entered the popular vernacular. Orwell, who had "encapsulated the thesis at the heart of his novel" in 1944, wrote most of Nineteen Eighty-Four on the island of Jura, Scotland, during 19471948 while critically ill with tuberculosis. He sent the final typescript to his friends Secker and Warburg on 4 December 1948 and the book was published on 8 June 1949. Nineteen Eighty-Four has been translated into more than 50 languages. The novel's title, its terms, its language (Newspeak), and its author's surname are bywords for personal privacy lost to national state security. The adjective "Orwellian" denotes many things. It can refer to totalitarian action or organization, as well as governmental ...

Steve Jobs demos Apple Macintosh, 1984

Demo of the first Apple Macintosh by Steve Jobs, January 1984, in front of 3000 people. Andy Hertzfeld captured the moment quite well in his retelling: "Pandemonium reigns as the demo completes. Steve has the biggest smile I've ever seen on his face, obviously holding back tears as he is overwhelmed by the moment. The ovation continues for at least five minutes before he quiets the crowd down."

David Bowie - 1984

"1984" is a song by David Bowie, from his 1974 album Diamond Dogs. Written in late 1973, it was inspired by George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and, like much of its parent album, originally intended for a never-produced stage musical based on the novel.

Bonanza Banzai - 1984

Bonanza Banzai was a popular group in Hungary. This song is inspired by George Orwell's novel, it has been released in 1991, on their 1984 album. This is the original version, but there are several remakes of it. Here's a translation for the lyrics (got from "Lirama" site): lirama.net (Background:) It is the exact opposite of the stupid hedonistic Utopias that the old reformers imagined. A world of fear and treachery is torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon, a world which will grow not less but more merciless as it refines itself. Progress in our world will be progress towards more pain. The old civilizations claimed that they were founded on love or justice. Ours is founded upon hatred. In our world there will be no emotions except fear, rage, triumph, and self-abasement. Everything else we shall destroy everything. Already we are breaking down the habits of thought which have survived from before the Revolution. Nineteen eighty-four Machines are shaking my dreams To prevent me from sleeping To make me always tired And to be interested in nothing, but nothing They disfigure your beauty To prevent you from excel You will be harmless to them Like all others refrain: I'm waiting for an angel to arrive And pay for the sin, if I sinned And if I have to go away from here, possible That you'll bury my body Your Big Brother watches you His voice warns you from walls He's at everywhere, you feel, But unable to see anywhere refrain refrain2: We're waiting for an ...

Tin Pan Caravan: Anais Mitchell- 1984

1984 is a song that cleverly fuses George Orwell's novel "1984" with the times of today also adding to the punchline of Prince's 1999. Probably one of the most clever tunes I've heard in years. What a group of musicians. I shot this footage at Guilford College during a very intimate show. Sit back and enjoy some music that your mind will enjoy. Visit their site. tinpancaravan.com

Akosh - 1984 [2005]

This is the latest version of 1984. The music has been recorded on "Az utolsó hangos dal - ráadás" concert on 4 June, 2005. Bonanza Banzai has broken up in 1994, but Akosh invited the old Bonanza Banzai staff to this concert, so they're performing this song together again. The song is based on George Orwell's novel. This video clip is a mix of the record of "Az utolsó hangos dal - ráadás" concert, the original video clip (www.youtube.com and older concert records. You can find the translation of the text on Lirama (lirama.net) site. The meaning of those texts, which flies through the screen during the video clip "WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH" Then more texts flies through behind Akosh's head, while Akosh says them: "You can't get a peaceful minute News of the war reach you day by day, excite you, and it's the same year for thousand days, because nineteen eighty-four still lasts!"

Ghostbusters (Trailer 1984)

my website: www.myxpitstop.com Three misfit parapsychology professors are booted out of their cushy jobs at New York City's Columbia University. Despite their relative lack of funding, they start an enterprise called Ghostbusters, a spectral investigation and removal service. One of the men has a plan to catch and contain supernatural entities, though it has never been properly tested. Undeterred, they obtain a former fire station as a base and begin advertising on local television. At first, their clients are few and far between, and the Ghostbusters have to depend on their individual talents to keep the business alive Dr. Egon Spengler is a scientific genius, Dr. Raymond "Ray" Stantz is an expert on paranormal history and metallurgy, and Dr. Peter Venkman has charm and business savvy, although he is in some ways a charlatan. Although he initially comes off as a bit of a goof and sleaze, Venkman eventually finds a subtly heroic side to himself when he learns that a creature called Zuul is haunting the apartment of Dana Barrett, a client who has become the object of his lustful intentions. Unfortunately, it soon becomes apparent to the Ghostbusters that the spike in paranormal events means they are headed toward a climactic confrontation with an entity ancient Sumerian God known as Gozer the Gozerian, whose presence was implied by bizarre occurrences such as the demonic Zuul appearing in Dana Barrett's apartment! The Ghostbusters are called on to save the Big Apple and ...
