Rugby World Cup 1999 South Africa preview

Rugby World Cup final 1995. 1999 preview. South Africa was selected to host the 1995 Rugby World Cup, and there was a remarkable surge of support for the Springboks among the white and black communities in the lead-up to the tournament. This was the first major event to be held in what Archbishop Desmond Tutu had dubbed "the Rainbow Nation." South Africans got behind the 'one team, one country' slogan. By the time they hosted the 1995 World Cup, the Springboks were seeded ninth. They defeated Australia, Romania, Canada, Western Samoa and France to play in the final. South Africa narrowly won the epic 1995 Rugby World Cup Final 15--12 against traditional rivals the All Blacks. A drop goal by Joel Stransky secured victory in extra-time. Wearing a Springbok shirt, Nelson Mandela presented the trophy to captain Francois Pienaar, a white Afrikaner. The gesture was widely seen as a major step towards the reconciliation of white and black South Africans. In 1998 Mallett and new captain Gary Teichmann tied the then-existing record of the 1965--69 All Blacks for longest Test winning streak, winning 17 consecutive Tests, including the 1998 Tri-Nations. In the same year, South Africa mourned as Christie's illness claimed his life. The Springboks entered the 1999 Rugby World Cup competition with little hope.

Heineken 2011 Rugby World Cup advertisment — original version with Rugby League footage

This advert was initially launched by Heineken as part of its 'This Is The Game' campaign building up to the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. A small portion of the ad includes footage of a Northern Union (Rugby League) match from the Mitchell & Kenyon archive. The match in question took place on November 2nd, 1901 between Salford and Batley at New Barnes, Salford. The footage is of Batley walking onto the field of play. Salford won this game 14--6. The 'This Is The Game' campaign featured well-known past international players such as England's Will Carling, New Zealand's Zinzan Brooke, Australia's Matt Burke, South Africa's Gary Teichmann, Ireland's Rob Henderson and Wales's Scott Quinnell. The irony is that prior to the advent of professionalism in 1995, Rugby League players were generally ostracised from Rugby Union clubs and its communities. So the men in the Northern Union clip would most likely have been banned from playing Rugby Union. In 1994, Scott Quinnell converted to Rugby League when he signed for Wigan, before returning to Rugby Union in 1996 after cross-code banning became obsolete in the professional era. Quinnell also represented Wales in the 1995 Rugby League World Cup.

Rugby World Cup '95 [Mega Drive] - Harry Yack's great cash-in special [1/2]

Note: Don't turn your speakers up too loud - volume levelling bugs ahoy! In the Mega Drive's lifespan of approximately eight years, the world saw tens of titles looking to emulate the grand old sport of football. Sensible Soccer, Super Kick Off and countless FIFA titles courtesy EA Sports graced Sega's premier console, most of which enjoyed a modicum of success piggybacking various domestic and international football competitions. Somewhere in all of this, its noticeably more hands-on cousin was lost in a quagmire of freshly churned Saturday afternoon mud. Rugby fans were starting to feel left out - up to now, Mega Drive owners only had Domark's International Rugby to satisfy their virtual rucking and scrumming urges. In 1994, Electronic Arts came to the rescue with a brand new rugby title that only slightly borrowed from a certain commercial soccer series. With such promising pedigree and with the 1995 World Cup on the horizon, how could it possibly fail? For those with a vested interest, Rugby World Cup 95 is a decent simulation of the sport. EA's trademark isometric viewpoint lends an element of individuality, while the FIFA International Soccer-style menus add familiarity. Doesn't cover up the fact they were blatantly stolen though, does it? :P In fact, it's all very FIFA. This does not prove too much of a problem, however, for it's certainly playable. Though the controls are relatively easy to get to grips with, the kicking mechanics are somewhat difficult to master ...

Madiba's World Cup Message

Madiba urges the Springboks to bring the cup home. Full text of message: Congratulations to the Springboks, die Bokke, Amabokhobokho. To Jake, John and every single member of the team, the squad and the management -- well done. You have made us all very proud to be South Africans in the world. You remind us again so powerfully of that proud day in 1995 when we not only won the Rugby World Cup, but even more importantly, celebrated ourselves as one nation uniting behind our victorious team. We regret not being able to be with you in person today; but you can be assured that we will be with you in spirit every minute of the match. You are fortunate to have our President with you. He carries with him the good wishes and support of all South Africans, including ourselves. And there are thousands of compatriots out there, carrying the flag for this great nation of ours. We know that our boys have the ability, strength and determination to be victorious once more. We are a winning nation! We acknowledge our problems and challenges and then proceed to tackle them with determination and in a spirit of optimism. We have overcome much in order to be where we are. You, our national team, represent that spirit. You have done us exceedingly proud thus far. Play the game hard and honestly. And whatever the outcome hold your heads high. We are convinced that you will triumph and bring the trophy home. Go Springboks, go!

Tribute to a South Africa Rugby Legend

www.rugbydump.com He came from Pretoria, from the Blue Bulls to smash nearly every South African rugby record including most Test tries (38) and most Tests (89). At over 6 feet tall, he was a giant at scrumhalf, towering over the likes of Justin Marshall and George Gregan. He left his mark on three world cup tournaments, contributing rugged defense and aggressive, 'sniping' runs as often as he could. His tackle in the 1995 final, on a rampaging Jonah Lomu was to go down in rugby folklore but was to become just one moment in a long list of highlights including a hat-trick against Scotland at Murrayfield, a Tri-Nations championship and the 1995 World Cup. Considered by many to be the greatest scrum half to have ever played the game; Joost van der Westhuizen, a proud South African and loyal Springbok.

Four years after he teared England apart single-handedly in the 1995 quarter-final, the big man struck again with a brilliant try by dispatching the helpless England defence with ease, a score which terminally halted English hopes of victory at HQ. Because we started cheering early. These guys were in the middle of the road on Beyers Naude Drive, in Northcliff, three hours before we beat England. For a whole 24 hours, hooting meant "Go Bokke" and not "get out of my $%*@$** way".
