On December 10th 1989 the first TAC commercial went to air. In that year the road toll was 776; by last year 2008 it had fallen to 303. A five minute retrospective of the road safety campaigns produced by the TAC over the last 20 years has been compiled. The montage features iconic scenes and images from commercials that have helped change they way we drive, all edited to the moving song Everybody Hurts by REM. This campaign is a chance to revisit some of the images that have been engraved on our memories, remember the many thousands of people who have been affected by road trauma and remind us all that for everyones sake; please, drive safely. Relatives of the Hillsborough disaster victims have demanded to see secret files about the tragedy. Controversy has long surrounded the role of the police in what was Britain's worst ever sporting disaster. Families of those killed believe a Major Incident Plan was never initiated by South Yorkshire police while some fans were denied emergency medical attention. They also dispute the findings of the single inquest into all 96 deaths, which ruled the victims were all dead, or brain dead, by 3.15pm. It subsequently recorded a verdict of accidental death. After the 20th anniversary of the disaster, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has confirmed that hundreds of official documents could be made public 10 years early. They are currently subject to the 30-year-rule, effectively keeping them under lock and key for another decade. Trevor Hicks, of the Hillsborough Families Support Group, who lost two teenage daughters on the day, said: "We have heard that a request has been made about the documents and we are expecting confirmation this week. "I am pleased, it's better late than never. "This will enable us to see the full picture of events in a way that we have been denied for 20 years." The documents in question could include police files and the records of other emergency services, government departments and local authorities. Daily Show host Jon Stewart will hosting a Q&A session with the surviving members of Nirvana on a SiriusXM broadcast celebrating the 20th anniversary of their landmark album Nevermind. Grohl and Novoselic also recalled how Nevermind felt like a dream come true. "It didn't really seem like this would happen. It was almost like a scam." That might explain the band's frugal living conditions during the recording: Nirvana's members split a room in a $70-a-night hotel. Then again, rappers Kid 'n Play were fellow residents of the Oakwood Corporate Apartments, where Grohl apparently met them at the free breakfast buffet; also among the hotel's denizens were "The Final Countdown" rockers Europe. I was surprised that no one else had uploaded this little gem, so I thought I'd dig out my copy. This was taped from Nationwide (the old BBC one tea time news magazine programme) almost 24 years ago, in November 1983. There were a number of interviews done on the BBC around this time, as publicity for the special "Five Doctors" programme that celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Doctor Who. I especially love the section at the end of this clip, where Sue Lawley interviews Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Peter Davison. Patrick Troughton was always my favorite Doctor. However in all of the interviews I have seen with him, he seems a little ill at ease. I think he felt, as a character actor, he shouldn't be "himself" too often. I think I saw an interview (also on Youtube)that may have been conducted the same day as this Nationwide appearance. Patrick was there with Peter Davison and seems much less relaxed in that one. I can only assume that he got more relaxed during the day (or maybe had a few drinks before the interview!), but Patrick is great fun in this interview, much more like the character that Deborah Watling and Frazer Hines often talk about, that funny, friendly eccentric Patrick. There is also a fascinating little interview with Verity Lambert, where she seems amazed that this little series she started in 1963 had lasted 20 years, I'm sure she'd be amazed in 1983 if she was told it'd last 44 years (and counting).
