NASA's Kepler Mission Announces Latest Planetary Discovery

The Kepler mission's science team announced its latest finding at a press conference on Monday, Dec. 5, 2011. The team announced the confirmation of Kepler-22b, its first planet found in the "habitable zone," the region where liquid water could exist on a planet's surface. The planet is about 2.4 times the radius of Earth, orbits around a star similar to our sun and is located 600 light-years away. Scientists don't yet know if Kepler-22b has a predominantly rocky, gaseous or liquid composition, but its discovery is a step closer to finding Earth-like planets. The planet's host star belongs to the same class as our sun, called G-type, although it is slightly smaller and cooler. Kepler also has discovered 1094 new planet candidates, nearly doubling its previously known count. Since the last catalog was released in February, the number of planet candidates identified by Kepler has increased by 89 percent and now totals 2326. Of these, 207 are approximately Earth-size, 680 are super Earth-size, 1181 are Neptune-size, 203 are Jupiter-size and 55 are larger than Jupiter. The findings, based on observations conducted May 2009 to September 2010, show a dramatic increase in the numbers of smaller-size planet candidates. New Planet Discovered by NASA; Kepler-22b Might Support Life

NASA has identified a new planet outside our solar system that might be able to support life. Kepler-22b, named after the orbiting telescope that discovered it, is about two and a half times the size of earth and is 600 light-years away, orbiting a sun-like star. The newfound planet?s average surface temperature is believed to be a comfortable 72 degrees Fahrenheit, which means it could sustain liquid water and puts it in the so-called habitable zone. NASA has been planet hunting with its Kepler space telescope since 2009 and has now identified over 2300 potential planets, about 50 of which seem to have the right conditions to support life.

NASA Discover New Earth Like Planet - Kepler-22b

It may have a radius about 2.4 times that of our home planet, but NASA scientists have confirmed that Kepler-22b — depicted in the artist's conception up top — is the first planet we've ever confirmed orbits within the so-called "habitable zone" of a Sun-like star, making it the most Earth-like planet we've yet discovered. In astronomy, the habitable zone (also known as the Goldilocks zone") is the region surrounding a star in which an orbiting planet could maintain liquid water (and, by extension, life) on its surface. And as the "Goldilocks" moniker implies, whether or not a planet resides inside a habitable zone has everything to do with whether the planet is a little too cold, a little too hot, or just right, temperature-wise. Take Kepler-21b, for example, whose discovery was announced last week by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory. Kepler-21b is even closer to the size of Earth than Kepler-22b, but it orbits far too close to its sun to sustain any form of life we're familiar with; as this conception of K-21b by artist Ron Miller clearly illustrates, surface temperatures on the planet are estimated to reach as much as 3000-degrees Fahrenheit — that's hot enough to melt iron, not to mention any hope of us ever calling K-21b "Earth 2.0." But Kepler-22b is a different story. Sure, the planet orbits about 15% closer to its star than Earth does to the Sun, but its star is also significantly cooler, dimmer, and smaller than ours. And while scientists have yet to ...

The son of five-time British Rally Champion Jimmy McRae and brother of rally driver Alister McRae, Colin McRae was the 1991 and 1992 British Rally Champion and, in 1995, became the first British person and the youngest to win the World Rally Championship Drivers' title. He still holds that record. McRae's outstanding performance on the Subaru World Rally Team enabled the team to win the World Rally Championship Constructors' title three times in succession in 1995, 1996 and 1997. After a four-year spell with the Ford Motor Co. team, which saw McRae win nine events, he moved to Citroën World Rally Team in 2003 where, despite not winning an event, he helped them win the first of their three consecutive manufacturers' titles. In November 2008 he was posthumously inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame. On his promotion for 1993, McRae initially drove the Prodrive-built Group A Subaru Legacy alongside Finns Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola and Markku Alén. McRae then won his first WRC rally in the car at that year's Rally New Zealand. It was also the first rally win for the newly formed Subaru World Rally Team, shortly before the Legacy was due to be pensioned off in favour of the new Subaru Impreza 555. Such were the ...

Kepler 22b - a planet in a star's habitable zone

Astronomers announced the discovery of Kepler 22b, a planet orbiting a star not unlike our own sun at a distance where life can thrive. The discovery was announced by a team of astronomers using the Kepler Space Telescope. Launched in 2009, Kepler's sole purpose is to hunt for earth like worlds around other stars. Unlike other telescopes, Kepler stares unblinkingly at a region of the sky in the constellation of Cygnus the Swan. It's 95 megapixel camera monitors 150000 stars in its field of view. But earth-like planets are impossible to directly image using our best telescopes; they are simply lost in the glare of their parent stars. Instead, Kepler monitors the slightest of changes in brightness of the star as its planet transits in front of it during its orbit. Using this technique, Kepler has discovered 28 exoplanets, and as many as 1500 possible new worlds are awaiting confirmation. Over time, the light from Kepler 22 briefly flickered by 1/2 of 1/1000 of a percent once every 290 days. Astronomers quickly understood that this was a planet within Kepler 22's habitable zone. A habitable zone is a range of distances around a star where the temperature is neither too hot, nor too cold, to support life. A habitable zone around a hotter star would be farther out, while a habitable zone around a cooler star would be closer in. Given any star's temperature, there is an orbit where the temperature is just right for life. Kepler 22b's orbital period places the planet within ...

Kepler 22b First Planet in Habitable Zone of Sun-like Star, NASA Confirms Dec. 5, 2011

NASA's Kepler Confirms Its First Planet in Habitable Zone of Sun-Like Star NASA's Kepler mission has confirmed its first planet in the "habitable zone," the region where liquid water could exist on a planet's surface. Kepler also has discovered more than 1000 new planet candidates, nearly doubling its previously known count. Ten of these candidates are near-Earth-size and orbit in the habitable zone of their host star. Candidates require follow-up observations to verify they are actual planets. The newly confirmed planet, Kepler-22b, is the smallest yet found to orbit in the middle of the habitable zone of a star similar to our sun. The planet is about 2.4 times the radius of Earth. Scientists don't yet know if Kepler-22b has a predominantly rocky, gaseous or liquid composition, but its discovery is a step closer to finding Earth-like planets. Previous research hinted at the existence of near-Earth-size planets in habitable zones, but clear confirmation proved elusive. Two other small planets orbiting stars smaller and cooler than our sun recently were confirmed on the very edges of the habitable zone, with orbits more closely resembling those of Venus and Mars. "This is a major milestone on the road to finding Earth's twin," said Douglas Hudgins, Kepler program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Kepler's results continue to demonstrate the importance of NASA's science missions, which aim to answer some of the biggest questions about our place in the universe ...
