This chantey, Hugill writes, "is of West Indian origin, hailing either from Barbadoes or Jamaica." In honor of my recent trip to Jamaica I'm recording it early. The chantey is related to the Jamaican folk songs "Missa Ram Goat" and "Hill and Gully Rider." In fact, in a whaling scene from the old Moby Dick film, it is the latter song which is sung. There is a type of work song in Jamaica called a digging song, to coordinate the action of pick-axes. Not only is the downbeat (the usual "pull" in halyard chanteys) emphasized, the fourth beat/pick-up beat also gets emphasis--this is where the axes are raised. The typical Jamaican rhythm lends emphasis to this beat. I think the person who transcribed Stan Hugill erred in notating the proper rhythm. I am clapping to show the rhythmic emphasis, which is like Jamaican "mento." Train: C651 Set 237/238 Route: JUR-BBT I went to the Westbound Platform where we always met during train camps, not noticing that the C651 came out of UPD at Jurong Freshly, I filmed the train as it was coming in, doors open normaly, the go to East Bound Platform View the train, then C651 Sound[Chime:Doors Are Closing...], doors closed normaly, [Chime:Next Station, NS2 Bukit Batok], at 01:45, Crossover tracks sound from the incoming tracks can be heard, then from the Crossover from the JKN Bound to MRB Bound can be heard from 02:01, then continue the journey with various sightings[Joking Larh], then the train approach NS2 Bukit Batok[Chime:NS2 Bukit Batok....NS2 Bukit Batok] then alighted, [Chime:Doors Are Closing...], then doors closed, then train departs for NS3 Bukit Gombak.
