Major Padmapani Acharya, Maha Vir Chakra (Posthumous) Of the 2nd Battalion of The RAJPUTANA RIFLES On 28 June 1999, in the battalion attack on the Tololing by the 2nd Rajputana Rifles, Major Padmapani Acharya was handed out the task of capturing a heavily backed enemy position. Success of the unit and brigade operation hinged on the early capture of this position. However, the company attack almost failed at the very beginning, when the enemy's artillery fire came down from all directions on the leading platoon, inflicting large numbers of casualties. With disregard for his own safety, Major Padmapani Acharya took the reserve platoon and led it through the raining artillery shells. Not knowing the hail of bullets from the enemy's bunker, Major Padmapani Acharya crawled up to the bunker and lobbed grenades. Severely injured and unable to move, he ordered his men to leave him and attack at the enemy while he continued to fire. The bunker was finally recaptured and the target was met. After completion of the mission, Major Acharya succumbed to his injuries. He was 31 years of age. Gavins Point serves as the southern most of the six main stem dam projects on the Missouri River basin system. At the end of June 2011, the dam was releasing an historic 160000 cubic feet per second of flood water through its spillway and power house. The large amount of water actually represents only a fraction of what the dam was designed to pass through its gates in an extreme flood event.
