Hi peoples! We made this film to showcase our CG abilities. We wanted to make the best showcase one can imagine for a new car. We chose the Porsche since we...just..like Porsches! We storyboarded, previzzed, animated and rendered it all in house. Production took 4 weeks, rendering on a 8 core MacPro took 4 months non stop. All frames rendered at a minimum of 1 frame an hour, some took 24 hours per frame (the door opening took that long because of the blurry reflections). Everything was rendered in 1920x817 in Cinema4D. No Radiosity was used, only some area lights and a nice environment based on an EMC room. Part 2 of this film is currently in production and is going to look even awesomer than this one :D ! We plan on doing some sort of trilogy based around the awesomeness of the car. The 3D Animation has been created in the course of a term project within my study focus 3D Graphics at the University of Applied Sciences in Ansbach. Focus of the project was destruction of one or more objects with no restricitions on type and scope. However, pointless destruction made no sense to me. I wanted to transport a message with the topic desctruction, to remind people and get their attention... After much thought and some back and forth I decided on a crash test. This 3D animation was developed as a visual metaphor. The story begins in a surrealistic landscape where a lone eagle dips and soars. Its flight is observed through telescopic sights by the driver of a unique machine a red Aston Martin Vantage. Suddenly the driver spots an opportunity one chance to get out of the desolate wasteland. And so the stage is set for a race that can only end in death or victory. The animation took several months to complete and was developed using a range of software including Carrara 7 Pro, Photoshop, Magix Music Maker and Cyberlink Power Director. The film is copyright. This is my fast paced montage of a somewhat typical vehicle model workflow for film & animation production with Autodesk Maya. Final shots rendered with Mental Ray for Maya and composited in Autodesk Toxik. Modeling, animation & video editing by Michael Backus. NOTE: Before commenting, I already know that this is very fast paced and over-edited so don't expect to follow along easily the first time around. The goal was to make a short video but at the same time condense enough of the 30 hour project so that viewers could get an idea of what this type of work is like. One thing's for certain: there's no "make car" button nor is there a "make pretty and shiny" button either. General workflow presented here should apply to all 3D content creation software- from Blender to 3ds Max and hopefully those starting out will gain a sense of scale- yet understanding and maybe even a little inspiration to go on and make their own large models. Modeling & Animation done in Autodesk Maya: Not much to it really. Import image planes of your model. Create a curve outline of the model so you can snap the outer geometry you create to it. From there it's pretty much a free hand process. This was done using just standard poly tools such as bevel, append to poly, extrude, duplicating & extracting, inserting/adding edge detail, and the occasional split & chamfering of vertices, etc. What you don't see in the video are the many, many tedious hours I spent "tweaking" and adjusting individual <b>...</b>

The 1.2-liter unit, a three-cylinder gasoline engine, can appropriately power a mid-class passenger car with a power output per liter of up to 120 kilowatts (163 hp). Compared to typical gasoline engines in this vehicle class, this is a downsizing by half—with up to 30 percent less fuel consumption.
