
Nick and I have discussed this 1gate expand thing several times, because you obviously can't wait for air units vs a 5min expo, since a 6.5 min factory gives you a 7.5min stargate and an 8.5 minute first air unit, therefora 9minute attack time, and a 5minute expo pays for itself by 8minutes, so by 9minutes you are behind... but you also don't want to try to punish at 5 or 6 minutes... a good punishment comes 3 minutes after the expo, so 8minute punish is ideal... so what can you get by 8minutes? I often use a few tanks and m&m, nick likes to add the 3rd rax and go for a pure infantry stim push... i prefer the tank idea because then if your punishment fails, you have the tech to come back later with air units, which are totally key in TvP after the first aoe unit shows his face. I've also played with a 2rax push that doesn't try to win, but simply to kill off sentries forcing him to re-make sentries, so that a greater % of his spending has been dedicated to crappy caster units when i come back for a second push later... an early push also seems to encourage him to cut probes to defend, but that could be player-dependent ;) Anyway here's an example of the 3rax response.
