A dense fog and rising swell greeted competitors and spectators on day 2 of the LBI Skim Jam presented by Surf Shack. Nevertheless, the morning started off quickly so as to avoid the forecasted afternoon onshore wind with heat A of the professional semi-finals kicking off just after 9:30 AM Although the better waves seemed to peak up on the point just 10 yards north of the competitors area, competitors were wise to stay close to the judging stand and deal with the "troughy" conditions created by the morning high tide as the dense fog greatly skewed the vision of the judges. This first heat saw the dramatic elimination of favored pro Morgan Just, who was coming straight off his win at the WCS only 1 weekend prior, as his left hamstring tightened up in an all-too-familiar fashion for him and threatened to ruin the rest of his season should he continue to finish his heat. Morgan took the safe route and bowed out mid-heat. Meanwhile John Akerman continued to wow the crowd in his pro debut with his perfectly executed 3-shuvs out to and on his waves. The consensus after day 1 was that if a new south swell did arrive as some forecasts predicted, then the pro finals could be borderline epic for an east coast event, and those forecasts were correct. Quarter Finals were run at a lower tide than the previous day, making for difficult conditions for many of the initial heats, which led to some early upsets. Local favorites Michael Brickle and Perry Wells, who looked like shoe-ins on the days prior, struggled with the poor waves and were nudged out in their Quater Final heats, leaving Woody Harris as the only North Carolinian left in the contest. Brad Domke, who's hand had been injured during his heat on Saturday, powered through the pain and into the Semi Finals, while fellow Floridian John Akerman flexed his technical abilities and smooth style to propel himself into the Semis where he would take an unfortunate 4th in an intense battle against Bryan, Domke and Harris, respectively. Akyuun and I don't have extensive knowledge of spoken Japanese, so it's hard to get everything down. If any of you can contribute your own notes, that would be lovely. Well folks, it's been a long and strange ride and I have somehow managed to avoid being banned from Youtube long enough to bring you this hella crazy though fine series. Even more broke than they were before, the animators have been reduced to using pen sketches with double the psycho babble. Bravo Gainax. Bra-vo. At the end of the episode, all of the characters gather in congratulation. Some would argue that it's Shinji that they are congratulating for finally getting his thumb out of his butt. I respectfully disagree. It is in fact Gainax and Hideaki Anno's (the creator, director, and writer of the series for those who didn't know) way of communicating to you, the audience. Congratulations! You didn't slit your wrists from the overwhelmingly pessimistic and depressing themes presented in the latter half! Great job! You didn't lose your freaking minds watching the insane imagery of the final two episodes! You done good subscribers, you done good.
