Flash Floods 'Kill Up To 440' In Philippines
The number of people killed after a typhoon hit the southern Philippines has risen to 440, reports say. Hundreds more are missing after torrential rain triggered by tropical storm Washi caused rivers to burst their banks while people slept in the Mindanao region. Among the worst-hit cities are Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. An estimated 100000 people have been left homeless. Those missing include a prominent local radio broadcaster, who was swept away while trying to save his neighbours, according to the city's mayor. Authorities said several people drowned in floodwaters on the island province of Negros Oriental, whose southern tip was nipped by the eye of the storm. Many people managed to escape by climbing onto their roofs, while tens of thousands fled to higher ground. "We stayed on top of our roof. All we could see were lights flashing while we made a hole on our roof to climb on," said one female survivor. Ayi Hernandez, a former congressman, said he and his family heard a loud "swooshing sound" and water quickly rose ankle deep inside his home. He decided to evacuate to a neighbour's two-storey house. "It was a good thing because in less than an hour the water rose to about 11ft (3.3 metres)," he said. The local government has declared a state of emergency in the flooded regions and sent food and water to the thousands of displaced families. "'Sajan Re Jhoot Mat Bolo' is a situational comedy that arises from a small lie that the protagonist, Apoorva, had to tell his employer Dhirubhai Jhaveri to get a job. Dhirubhai is a very successful businessman who hates lies and liars, and believes in family bonding and values. His belief in these values at times cross levels of normalcy & are unbelievably rigid. Apoorva, an orphan was raised in an orphanage and to get the job in Dhirubhai's company, lies that he as a full-fledged family back in India. Apoorva's description of his imaginary family makes Dhirubhai fall in love with each and every member. Dhirubhai has a niece Aarti, who is young, beautiful and believes in the same values as her uncle. They both trust Apoorva blindly, and Apoorva has earned this trust and respect on the basis of his hard work. Over time he has become the Man Friday for Dhirubhai as well as Aarti. Apoorva has also developed a liking for Aarti, but has refrained from expressing his feelings to her. Dhirubhai fixes Aarti's marriage but in a dramatic turn of events, the marriage is called off at the last moment and Dhirubhai decides to marry Aarti with Apoorva. (Reuters) - More than 250 people were killed and almost twice that number were missing after a typhoon hit the southern Philippines, officials said Saturday, triggering flash floods and landslides and forcing tens of thousands from their homes. Typhoon Washi, with winds gusting up to 90km/h (56 mph), hit the resource-rich island of Mindanao late Friday, bringing heavy rain that also grounded some domestic flights and left wide areas without power. The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) said 256 people were killed in flash floods in Mindanao and another island. Soldiers and police were recovering more bodies washed ashore in nearby towns. "The death toll might still rise because there are still a lot of missing people," said Gwendolyn Pang, secretary-general of the PNRC. She said the hardest-hit areas were in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro. Almost 400 people were unaccounted for, most of them from a coastal village in Iligan. Houses were swept into the sea by floodwaters while people were sleeping inside late Friday. The latest Red Cross figures put the death toll in Iligan at 144. Another 86 were killed in Cagayan de Oro, many of them children. Five miners were killed in a landslide in Monkayo on Mindanao and another 21 people drowned on the central island of Negros, the PNRC said.
