Steve Ovett's last championship medal in the 1986 Commonwealth Games. By this time he was past his best and had moved up to 5000m to contest his first championship race at the distance. By winning, he extended his extraordinary range, having already won Olympic gold at 800m as well as 1500m golds at the Europeans & two World Cups. Here he can be seen beating team mates Hutchings and Jack Buckner, who would go on to win the European title at the same distance less than a month later. In that Stuttgart race, Ovett was forced to retire with another chest infection. The anticipated clash with Aouita at the following year's World Championships in Rome never really materialised, and Ovett was never a force again. Sit back and enjoy his last great triumph.

The Games of '74,as far as the mens' track events go,could claim to be one of the greatest championships ever...along with Bayi's astonishing 1500m. world record came great marathon,10k and steeplechase races,Quarrie's double, the second fastest 800m.ever and this,the second fastest ever 5000m.,just a second or so shy of Puttemans world record. Jipcho just gets past Foster who loses any chance he had with a lapped runner in the way.Jipcho was named by Foster as his Man Of The Games,as he also took gold in the Steeplechase anda bronze behind Bayi and Walker in the 1500 m. He turned professional shortly after these games. Also in the race were Dave Bedford and defending champion Ian Stewart. With no apparent BBC coverage available I culled this footage from the Official documentary of the Games ,so no David Coleman, but commentary from the stands by the legendary Arthur Lydiard can't be bad! Nearly four decades on and I'm still willing the lapped runner to get out of Foster's way....but he never does!
