52nd Street - 'Cool as Ice'

The track that inducted UK's Factory Records into the black music arena. This was 52nd Street's first US hit and the first Factory top 20 Billboard entry outside of the Joy Division/New Order camp. This was a pivotal period in dance and club music in the UK. This track along with Blue Monday merged punk/new wave culture with funk and electro -but instead of this imaging US sound-alikes had a Manchester sound of its own. This was also the Hacienda's theme song as demonstrated on the 'A Factory Outing 51' video 'FAC71'. This was 52nd Street phase 1: Beverley McDonald, Derrick Johnson, Tony Henry, John Dennison and Tony Thompson. Song was produced by Bernard Sumner of New Order and Donald Johnson of A Certain Ratio. A&R was Rob Gretton. This is also a tribute to Beverley who passed away Christmas 2006. Bev is and will always be a Factory legend. She was, in that period the cutting edge of the band visually. Her vocal style and presence was the very statement of what Factory Records and the whole Manchester movement was about in the early 80s. Play this classic loud. Enjoy.... RIP Beverley McDonald. RIP Rob Gretton. RIP Tony Wilson.

tinyurl.com The 52nd Grammy Awards Grammy Awards 01/31/2010 Beyonce and Taylor Swift are poised to take home a lot of hardware tonight as they lead all artists with 10 and eight nominations, respectively. The ladies also perform, along with fellow Album of the Year nominees the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and the Dave Matthews Band. The Grammy Awards (originally called the Gramophone Awards)—or Grammys—are presented annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States for outstanding achievements in the music industry. The awards ceremony features performances by prominent artists, and some of the awards of more popular interest are presented in a widely-viewed televised ceremony. The awards were established in 1958. Prior to the first live Grammys telecast in 1971 on ABC, a series of taped annual specials in the 1960s called The Best on Record were broadcast on NBC. The first Grammy Award telecast took place on the night of November 29, 1959, as an episode of the NBC anthology series Sunday Showcase, which was normally devoted to plays, original TV dramas, and variety shows. Until 1971, awards ceremonies were held in both New York and Los Angeles, with winners accepting at one of the two. Pierre Cossette bought the rights to broadcast the ceremony from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and organized the first live telecast.[1] CBS bought the rights in 1973 after moving the ceremony to Nashville, Tennessee; the American ...

Tokyo Earthquake - Mori Tower 52nd Floor (11/3/2011)

I was on the 52nd floor of the Mori Tower in Roppongi Hills when the earthquake struck. You can get a sense of how much the tower was shaking from the curtains moving and the people screaming. The earthquake itself was scary, but the psychological fear of the tower collapsing etc was stronger. Well after the earthquake stopped, the building continued to sway back and forth. We ended up waiting about 1 1/2hrs for the lifts to start up again.
