This clip is a bit tragic; The Crystals didn't sing on "He's a Rebel", and here they are - almost 3 years later - miming to Darlene Love & The Blossoms' voices. Well, it's Darlene who sings lead at least. Please don't forget to check out my other channel: www.youtube.com

Cults - You Know What I Mean - live @ Mercury Lounge, March 31, 2011

The wonderful band Cults performed at The Mercury Lounge on Thursday, March 31, 2011. Mixing motown, 60's girl group and flat-out Diana Ross with The Supremes stylings (all embedded in guitar-and-glockenspiel enhanced layers) - they are a heady mixture that I am quite high on. The Blossoms - That's When The Tears Start

"That's When The Tears Start" - One of my all time favourite records. The legendary Darlene Love led the Blossoms, having first had a spectacular solo career with Phil Spector in the early Sixties. The Blossoms were a Motownesque group of girl backing singers, for many Sixties TV shows, often actually backing up the original Motown acts themselves. for shows like "Shindig". They recorded this Van McCoy Northern Soul anthem for Reprise Records in 1967. In 1989 I covered it with The Velvelettes for Motorcity. Darlene carried on recording, having the awesome Phil Spector 1970s production "Lord If You're A Woman", which was also a massive Northern Soul monster. I was flabbergasted at how sincere and helpful and co-operative and utterly wonderful that Darlene was to re-record and film this wonderful gem, especially as she had also become a very successful actress, appearing in all four "Lethal Weapon" films. She was in London with her sister Barbara, also one of the original Blossoms, so the opportunity to film the group for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul' was just priceless, and so very much appreciated.

The single is the lead track from the 'Dreams of Another Day' EP which will be released through 'Fierce Panda' on CD and digital download on 27th September 2010. Camera and Editing by Matt Silcox and Russell Bates Lyrics Razor tea-cups and tip top craic of the crooked, Backstreet Lovers and sons Lawless law men walk the streets of Dirty meadows of foul mouthed mothers and guns Brick blacked-up kids mugged me the day I ran off with your sister a young school maid, caught up in a world of Backstreet Lovers. Lovers and sons, I waved her away to a friend at least that's what she said. Rotting teeth of a grubby gran fill the alleys of the stolen roll-ups and blunts a skin-head dad came cap in hand with a duster and flash of switch blade fun still on the dole, though the picket was broken a soiled age ago. The Dixie Cups - Iko Iko (oldies show)

PLEASE NOTE: I divided my uploads between multiple channels, Bookmark this link in your browser for instant access to an index with links to all of John1948's oldies classics. LINK: tinyurl.com A '60s girl group, the Dixie Cups consisted of one cousin (Joan Marie Johnson) and two sisters (Barbara Ann Hawkins and Rosa Lee Hawkins). All three young ladies were from New Orleans, as was producer and singer Joe Jones, who discovered the talented threesome and took them to New York. The trio was almost known as the Meltones -- or worse, Little Miss and the Muffets -- but the name Dixie Cups was settled on by 1964. That was the year the girls recorded the well-remembered song "Chapel of Love" on the Red Bird Records label. The number was written by Phil Spector, Ellie Greenwich, and Jeff Barry, and intended to be released by the Ronettes, Darlene Love, or the Crystals. That one single was enough to carry the group into music history. It became the Dixie Cups' biggest success, a million-seller, and a worldwide hit. A few other hits followed through 1964 and into 1965, like "You Should Have Seen the Way He Looked at Me," "Little Bell," "Iko Iko," and "People Say." A year later, Red Bird Records was out of the picture. The trio moved to ABC-Paramount, but there were no more hits, and 1966 saw the end of the Dixie Cups. There had been other singles, like "Gee the Moon Is Shining Bright" and "Girls Can Tell," but there weren't enough fans to back the releases. In 1974, Rosa Lee and ...

The Chiffons - He's So Fine

Listen LIVE to RadioCarino - audiorealm.com The Chiffons were one of the top girl groups of the early 1960s. With their trademark tight harmonies, high-stepping confidence and the hit machine of Goffin and King writing songs such as "One Fine Day," the Chiffons made music that helped define the girl group sound of the era. The group was originally a trio comprising lead singer Judy Craig, Patricia Bennett and Barbara Lee. They formed at James Monroe High School in The Bronx in 1960. At the suggestion of songwriter Lonnie Mack, Sylvia Peterson was added to the group in 1962. Peterson had previously sung with Little Jimmy & the Tops in 1959 when she was 14. This group had a local hit with "Puppy Love" (V-Tone). Sylvia shared the lead with Jimmy on the single's B-Side, "Say You Love Me". Peterson would later sing lead on the Chiffons' "Why Am I So Shy", "Strange, Strange Feeling", "The Real Thing" and on "My Block", written by Jimmy Radcliffe, Carl Spencer and Bert Berns, and "When The Boy's Happy", for the Chiffons in the early days when they were recording as the Four Pennies. They changed their name to the Chiffons in early 1963.
