My start at being my own transmission mechanic, hasn't gone well. I tried to give a little more life to my old transmission, by giving it bigger serveros, to put more pressure on the burnt clutches. I screwed that up, it was very difficult to get the servo in, wile the transmission was in the van. I have now "sanded out" the damage I caused in the servo bore, and put the original servo back in. The new servo will just be in the new transmission. I will now ride out the transmission in the van, until I lose third and fourth, next spring or summer I am hoping, or maybe when I get my garage built. (I now have spousal permission to build a real garage w heat :-)). I got an 84 transmission, that also needs a rebuild, for $100. The newest transmission I can use is 92, and that's 20 years old. I figured I would rebuild whatever I get. There is too many scammers out there that want $1000 for their "rebuilt" transmission. Most of them haven't even cleaned the thing, what is to say its "rebuilt", and its not rebuilt the way I want anyway. So this is a video of the servo screw up and the start of the rebuild of my 84 transmission. Parts are on there way. Although the 85-92 trans was better than 84 this one will be built for towing, and a future diesel conversion, better than anything 20 years old.

Here is a quick video of the 1987 Toyota Supra I'm building. It will be a cheap and easy project using a motor I've had and a 1987 Toyota Supra I just bought. The Supra is a hard top with a bad motor / blown head gasket. Plans are to put in a 350 Chevrolet Vortec 350 Motor with a 700R4 Transmission. I'll post pics and vids along the way so people can see how it's done. The car was purchased for $600 and the parts will be limited to $900. I'm trying to do this project for $1500 not including the cost of the engine. $75 has already been spent on paint and supplies. It'll have a black paint job with a red stripe down the center. So now there is $825 left to play with. Will be purchasing some steel to weld up braces for the motor and weld in patches for the transmission tunnel. The driveshaft will be done by a local shop and should run @$150. Stay tuned, the projects just beginning!

Basics on how a transmission governor works. The large weights on the outside control the low speed shift, the lighter inner weights and springs control the high speed (WOT) shift points. Ligher weights will move your shift points to a higher rpm. As the governor spins, it forces the weights out, which moves the plunger up toward the gear, changing the flow of fluid to shift gears.

So i recently went on a little trip ( videos to come later) and I have alot of crap at my dads place in Atlanta so I picked up a couple items on the way through. First up is a 305 I took out of a 77 caprice, I say in the video that I dont think it could be the original engine from the car, but I guess its possible? You tell me! Anyway, I heard the car run and bought it, then ran it a few times before putting it in a pickup I was working on. Started it a few times since, and now here she sits. Runs great, has a big cam, not sure what lift or duration or anything else about it for that matter...except how it sounds! The 700r4 tranny is from a 91 chevy s10 I had and the wiring harness burnt up on. I will sale either one of these here locally in Raleigh. Engine I will take $400 for, and trans I will take 250 for, both are in perfect working order

taming the mis-behaving 700r4 in my truck. Added a new cable end to the TV cable, changed the fluid and filter, again. The original filter was installed incorrectly. Also, I started removing the engine oil cooler from the truck. This oil cooler has caused me nothing but grief and I'm tired of it. The Engine that's currently in the truck came out of a 3/4 ton van and didn't require the oil cooler, I'm sure my jimmy blazer will be fine. I'll just keep an eye on the temps if I'm towing anything.

I've learned a lot over the winter rebuilding my Chevy automatic transmissions. Thanks a bunch to Michelle for letting me take over the basement all winter and putting up with the musk of burnt tranny fluid. I feel much better about my automatic Astro van now, knowing I can fix the transmission, should I burn it out. Before it was like "when's this trans going to go?" and I would always be on the look out for a new van, or have a back up truck ready to go. Now I will have a back up automatic transmission built and ready to install. I didn't really film the rebuilding, cause honestly I didn't know what I was doing, and it took about 6 months, hour here, hour there. Next one I will film, with short cuts, to show what you most likely get with a $800 rebuild. I did a few mods to the automatic transmission to make it hold up better towing the 4500lb electrical trailer. Those mods are going to cost me more work on the install, because I will have to mess about pulling the governor, and modifying the governor, to get the shift rpms back to where they were before the higher pressures and bigger valves. I have 2 videos covering the mods I did here.
Whoever "rebuilt" Lou's transmission either installed something incorrectly, forgot a step, or a part was defective. I was coming back down to Denver from the Black Hawk area when I began having trouble getting the thing to shift out of 1st. Normally you just need to feather the pedal and it'll shift. Not today. Transmission temps looked good on the gauge, and I was confused. Things really started getting bad when I suddenly didn't have overdrive! So I took it slow (temps still good) and suddenly - a waterfall of ATF and lots of burnt clutch smell. Fun stuff. Looks like poor old Lou is due for an overhaul...
