Almost 50 years ago since Lufthansa penned the purchase contract for its first four B707 jet aircraft, and was a launch costumer for a 737 in 1965 and today the airline and Boeing signed another ground-breaking agreement: As launch customer, Lufthansa has placed orders for twenty Boeing 747-8 passenger jets. Lufthansa will be the world's first airline to begin services with this new wide-body 747-8I. Watch this new Lufthansa 747-8 rollout and take it to the skies. G-GSSF was the third Boeing 747-8F on order by Atlas Air, delivered to Global Supply Systems and operated on behalf of British Airways World Cargo. The aircraft left Seattle en-route to Hong Kong, prior to a flight to Delhi. The first scheduled arrival into Stansted was at 6:10am on Friday 30th December 2011. Despite a VERY early start for me, I arrived at the airport in the dark only to receive a message saying the flight was delayed by 3 hours! With other engagements I wasn't able to capture the arrival (see my other video for G-GSSD landing), however I did return in the afternoon and literally as we pulled up, GSSF had been pushed back so it was a very mad panic to get all the equipment setup in time for the takeoff. I was surprised that the aircraft was so much quieter, sure when it goes past it's loud, but there didn't seem so much of the ongoing roar after departure. Additionally, I thought on throttle up that the engines sounded a little like a 777. On May 2nd, 2012, Lufthansa became the first airline in the world to take delivery of a Boeing 747-8. After the handover at Boeing's manufacturing facility in Everett, Washington, the new "Jumbo" with the registration D-ABYA performed a touch and go at Hamburg Airport, where Lufthansa Technik is based, before flying on to its future home base in Frankfurt, where it landed safely. On 1 June, the world's first passenger flight with a Boeing 747-8 aircraft will depart from Frankfurt as flight LH 418 bound for Washington Dulles International Airport in the US capital, Washington DC. Lufthansa also introduced three new seat configurations, economy class, business class and first class are all new in design.

The delivery ceremony included Dragon Dancers (Mak Fai Washington Kung Fu Club Lion Dance Team) to bless the crew and it's passengers. The Dragon Dancers went outside where the two aircraft were parked nose to nose to bless the new airplanes.

After the short delay in delivery of the first new Boeing 747-8 Freighter, to Cargolux, the Luxembourg-based freight carrier put the 747-8F straight into service. Here you can watch the largest Boeing aircraft as it is put straight to work by Cargolux. The 747-8 Freighter is a world leader in air cargo capacity and Cargolux make sure they maximise its capacity with the first revenue flight of this new jumbo jet. A range of air freight has been carried by Cargolux including a rather nice black Rolls Royce Phantom.
