Now HERE'S a mystery label - along with the "American Record" 78 of the Don Byas Quartet I'm posting, which is surely from the same recording session - whenever that may be. ;) See, the matrix #'s are seqential on the records, but the records have NO issue/catalog numbers!!!!! Can anyone (DaveSwinger?) enlighten us on these mystery records? UPDATE: Courtesy of fellow YouTube user and record collector "DaveSwinger": "'New York, Sept. 17. - American Records, the new label which is slated to make its appearance within a few weeks is backed by Enny DeVries, prexy of International Record Company, heretofore confined solely of waxing French and special material. Label, which has Bill Simon handling the waxing end is featuring small hot groups and has already cut "Dark Eyes" and "Slam, Don't Shake Like That." - Billboard, 22 September 1945' This record was issued probably in November 1945. It may have even been reissued under the American Record banner the following month. There is a trade ad in the 22 December 1945 Billboard magazine that list these two as follows: American Records A1001 - Laura / Dark Eyes A1002 - Stardust / Slam, Don't Shake Like That They were distributed by Goody Record Distributing Co. located at 853 9th Ave in New York City." Anyways, the personnel for this September 6, 1945 session are: Don Byas - tenor sax Johnny Guarnieri - piano Slam Stewart - bass JC Heard - drums Dig.....
