I chased it from Oakland to Stockton, California, with a memorable and historical meet at Hearst with Southen Pacific 4-6-2 #2472 and Robert Dollar Tank Engine #3. The Union Pacific's famous 844 steam locomotive, built in 1944, is the longest-running steam train in America. It still runs on UP's mainlines today. July 20, 2008 taking 750 rail fans from Denver to the biggest rodeo in the world, Cheyenne Frontier Days in Wyoming. UP 844 Western Heritage Tour - April 11 - May 12 Cheyenne-California-Cheyenne Steam Locomotive No. 844 is the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific Railroad. It was delivered in 1944. A high-speed passenger engine, it pulled such widely known trains as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger. Many people know the engine as the No. 8444, since an extra '4' was added to its number in 1962 to distinguish it from a diesel numbered in the 800 series. The steam engine regained its rightful number in June 1989, after the diesel was retired. When diesels took over all of the passenger train duties, No. 844 was placed in freight service in Nebraska between 1957 and 1959. It was saved from being scrapped in 1960 and held for special service. The engine has run hundreds of thousands of miles as Union Pacific's ambassador of goodwill. It has made appearances at Expo '74 in Spokane, the 1981 opening of the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans and the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Los Angeles Union Station in 1989. Hailed as Union Pacific's "Living Legend," the engine is widely known among railroad enthusiasts for its excursion runs, especially over Union Pacific's fabled crossing of Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming. To celebrate New Mexico's and Arizona's statehood into the union in 1912, Union Pacific is running a steam special to New Mexico and Arizona via, Colorado, Texas, and on the return trip, California, Nevada, Utah and back to Cheyenne. Today's leg of the trip was from Denver's North Yard, to Colorado Springs on Colorado's Joint Line. This is the third time the 844 has ran on the Joint Line since 1998, so this sight was very welcoming to literally thousands. Personal Input: I woke up at 4:30 in the morning to prepare, endured below freezing temps, and it was all worth it! The train was amazing!! Short, but amazing! The train consisted of 844, the forth time I've seen it I'm person, and in tow was UP 1996, the third heritage unit I've seen in person. I chased this train from Denver all the way to Colorado Springs, a distance of about 72 miles. Like every steam special, the crowds were massive in numbers, but nothing compared to what will happen in New Mexico and Arizona. Enjoy the video!!
