Chasing the MKSTU down the UP Pratt Subdivision
Starting out at Stevens, Texas we catch the MKSTU (18th Street Yard Kansas City KS - Tuscon, AZ) led by UP 8585 as it meets an empty grain train led by 7288. We then follow it into Stratford, TX to catch them crossing the BNSF diamond. Then its on to Conlen, TX which has an interesting story (see below) Finally, we catch them one more time just outside Dalhart, TX where a crew change will occour. Also the crew on this train was amazing, even though having the trip from Hell. Locomotives: UP 8585, 9136, 9167, 8457, 2158* The story of the happenings at Conlen: After the MKSTU crossed the diamond in Stratford, my friend and I waited to catch the BNSF train HDENBEL which was waiting to cross the diamond. during his passing we heard 8585 and UP DS 478 talking. UP 8585 was reporting engine trouble with their 4th unit SD70ACe #8457, the Dispatcher contacted the eastbound AAGNS led by 5498 and asked if they could give a unit to MKSTU, the conductor said yes they could, so the dispatcher told the 8585 to tie down their train on the main East of the switch and pull their power into the siding. After arriving in Conlen, the next 20-25 minutes were quite entertaining as the crews of tha AAGNS and MKSTU went to work cutting SD60M 2158 off the AAGNS and added it to the MKSTU. To make matters worse for the crew of the MKSTU, during the power swap, the engineer told the conductor that he had to isolate the 9136 a C40-8, due to a battery malfunction.
