NS 852 with two Can-openers and friends at the Brickyard and CP Rose in Altoona
October 16, 2010 Altoona, Pennsylvania Upon getting in the car about to leave the Horseshoe Curve, we looked up to see what may have been my worst nightmare come alive, two Conrail can-openers were leading something east down the mountain. It moved at a slow pace, so we chased it to the Brickyard. Everything seemed fine, as the NS 852, a coal drag with these two blue devils for power approached, until t his happened: 2:26 PM - With NS 852 rounding the curve to the west, the gates went down, and what set them off was NS 21J, seen here giving us the finger as they head west with NS CW40-9 9475, NS C40-8 8689, and NS CW40-9 9398 pulling the intermodal west, as a rather loud RS3L horn started to become audible, and 852 rolled east behind 21J's train, with NS SD60 6716 (one of two still blue SD60s still out there) in Conrail paint, and NS CW40-8 8330 in Conrail paint pulling the PP&L Coal train, and NS SD40E 6321 and NS SD40E 6316 pushing. 21J - Rutherford, IL - Chicago-63rd Street, IL Intermodal NS CW40-9 9475 NS C40-8 8689 NS CW40-9 9398 852 - Williard, OH - York Haven, PA Coal Loads NS SD60 6716 CR NS CW40-8 8330 CR 2 -33 PM A helper set cuts through the tense mood of disappointment with a loud P5 horn, NS SD40E 6307 and NS SD40E 6324 are the units. We gave 852 another whirl, with no hope of getting it, we looked at Rose to see what we'd get, and were happy to see that it had stopped to let the helpers off and get a new crew. 2:50 PM - NS 22W rolls east by the 852 with NS <b>...</b>
