D 957, No. 4 Standchen ~ Franz Schubert
Schwanengesang ("Swan song") is the title of a posthumous collection of songs by Franz Schubert. Unlike the earlier Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise, it uses poems by three poets, Ludwig Rellstab (1799--1860), Heinrich Heine (1797--1856) and Johann Gabriel Seidl (1804-1875). Schwanengesang has the number D 957 in the Deutsch catalogue. The collection was named by its first publisher Tobias Haslinger, presumably wishing to present it as Schubert's final musical testament to the world. In the original manuscript in Schubert's hand, the first 13 songs were copied in a single sitting, on consecutive manuscript pages, and in the standard performance order. Some[who?] claim that the last song, Taubenpost, text by Johann Gabriel Seidl (1804--1875), catalogue number D 965 A, is not part of the cycle as Schubert conceived it. However, it's not clear that Schubert intended it to be a cycle at all, or if he did, that he completed it before he died. It may have been Tobias Haslinger, Schubert's publisher, who conceived of it as a cycle, or attempted to finish an incomplete work by adding Taubenpost onto the end. So most people consider Haslinger's published version 'the' version, and that's how it's performed today. Taubenpost is considered to be Schubert's last Lied. Franz Liszt later transcribed these songs for solo piano. Schubert also set to music a poem named Schwanengesang by Johann Senn, unrelated to this collection (number D744 in the Deutsch catalogue). ~Taken from Wikipedia

Island hopping across the South Pacific. Starts with from Honolulu to visit Majuro then on to Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk and Guam on Continental Micronesia 957. All beautiful places, wonderful people and lots of ocean in between! Pretty empty flight in the beginning. An incredible journey. Incidentally the 747 parked at the 9:21 mark is ex Northwest Air N627US that crash landed in Guam a couple years earlier beyond repair.

Gerard Souzay: Abschied D.957 (Schubert's Schwanengesang) Gérard Souzay's public appearances began in 1945 with recitals and concerts, including a performance of Fauré's Requiem in a centenary tribute to the composer at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He rapidly established an international career as a recitalist, admired not only in French music but also for his command of the German repertoire, especially Schubert and Schumann. In recital, his first accompanist was Jacqueline Bonneau (who had been his contemporary at the Paris Conservatoire), but she was reluctant to travel and from 1954 onwards he formed a close partnership with the American pianist Dalton Baldwin which continued for the rest of his career. Souzay's exceptional linguistic gifts enabled him to sing convincingly in 13 different languages including Hebrew, Portuguese and Russian. In contemporary music he performed in Honegger's La danse des morts and in the world première of Stravinsky's Canticum sacrum. The composer Jacques Leguerney (1906-1997) wrote many songs for Souzay and for his sister. His operatic career began in 1947 in Cimarosa's Il matrimonio segreto at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, but it was not until the late 1950s that he extended his stage work - though even then it did not take precedence over his recitals. His roles included Monteverdi's Orfeo, Mozart's Don Giovanni and Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro, Lescaut in Massenet's Manon, and Méphistophélès in Berlioz's La damnation de <b>...</b>

In 1940 Petre Munteanu made his operatic debut at the Royal Opera of Bucharest. However he continued his studies in Germany and went to Berlin, where he became a student of H. Weissenborn. After the World War II, he excited the Italian public as a concert singer. In 1947 he made his debut at the opera of Rome as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni. In the same year 1947 he came to the Milans La Scala, where he appeared in the role of Ferrando in Così fan tutte. He then continued on to participate in the premiers of Igor Stravinskys Persephone, Cimarosas Credulo and Alban Bergs Wozzeck. In 1954 he sang at the Opera of Rome in the first Italian performance of the fairy tale opera Snegourotchka by Rimsky Korssakow. Further appearances at the Covent Garden Opera in London, at the State Operas of Vienna and Munich, at the opera houses of Triest, Florenz and Napoli. In 1948 he sang at the Festival of Edinburgh, and in 1948-1949 at Glyndebourne Festival as Ferrando in Così fan tutte. Oh. My. God. I was on the verge of breaking down and throwing my computer out the window. This video took me 3-4 days to upload; literally. The first two attempts failed over night and the last upload took two days to complete. I just hope it was worth all the hassle. Okay, back to the more serious gameplay. Dicking around is fun and all at times, but that's not what I'm going for in my videos. This video was recorded over the duration of an entire round, but with all the boring parts cut out. After looking through all the footage again, it appears I have an extra few frames between some transitions. Not a big deal, but still.
