Planck insisted that this was simply an aspect of the processes of absorption and emission of radiation and had nothing to do with the physical reality of the radiation itself. However, at that time, this appeared not to explain the photoelectric effect (1839), ie that shining light on certain materials can function to eject electrons from the material. In 1905, basing his work on Plancks quantum hypothesis, Albert Einstein postulated that light itself consists of individual ...

Crash Course: Chapter 9 - A Brief History of US Money by Chris Martenson

Chapter 9 (A Brief History of US Money): Beginning with the panic of 1913, this chapter touches on important events in the history of US money, such as the creation of the Federal reserve, FDRs confiscation of private gold, the Bretton Woods agreement, and Nixons slamming of the gold window. We learn that the current international monetary system of unbacked currencies is only 37 years old, and is operating outside of the standards established by the Bretton Woods agreement. The system were operating within has not been planned or designed: it emerged out of a crisis. Dr. Martenson also provides graphs of total US Federal Debt, and Total US money stock, both of which are growing with no end in sight. www.chrismartenson.com

A Brief History of Silent Hill

Apologies about the annoyingly low audio levels, by the way. Just use the subtitles if you want. Also, any opinions expressed in the video are not necessarily my own. After the surprisingly positive reaction to the first video that stepped outside of my comfort zone of Noisy Hill, I bring you A Brief History of Silent Hill (no, I haven't quite yet stepped out of the comfortable arms of Silent Hill). 10 years ago today, Silent Hill 1 was released, and here's a brief video explaining some things that you already knew about the town. When I realised that Silent Hill's 10th birthday was in 2009, I thought "Great! Maybe I'll do some kind of Brief History to celebrate. I should have loads of time." This was last week, before I realised when the anniversary actually was, so please excuse the fact that this was rushed, especially the video, which was thrown together at the last minute in a desperate attempt to try and make me get this out in time. Annoyingly, some parts of the video freeze, meaning that you have a nice shot of Cybil when you should be looking at Harry, but oh well... you get the point. By the way, I have about 5 minutes of that Origins glitch recorded somewhere, waiting to be uploaded at some point. Looks weird, right? Also, Press Start to begin... seriously, Homecoming took ages for me to get any footage at all, so be thankful you got any. About subtitles: Added them using the YouTube thing. I think I'm going to do this more often, what do you think? And no, I'm ...

The History of Nikola Tesla - a Short Story

Friend me on Facebook! on.fb.me Read more about Nikola Tesla amzn.to I made this for the 154th anniversary of Nikola Tesla's birth, which was July 10th. Thanks to www.vvomedia.com for helping promote this video. Nikola Tesla was born on July 10th 1856, in the territory of modern day Croatia to his two Serbian parents. Tesla grew up into bright inquisitive, yet eccentric child, who found himself fascinated by the world around him. Tesla once tried to fly by jumping off the roof of a barn while holding on to an umbrella. He devised a bug powered motor using Junebugs, but had to abort his experiment after a friend decided to eat some of the bugs (Tesla thought this was gross). He once attempted to generate electricity by rubbing two cats together, which resulted in two very mad cats and a scratched up Tesla. On June 6th, 1884, Tesla arrived in the United States. He was hired by Thomas Edison to do basic electrical engineering, but moved up to re-designing the direct current generators that ran Edison's business. Edison offered Tesla $50000, or about $1.1 million in today's currency to make these improvements. After completing this assignment, Tesla asked about the payment for his work. Edison didn't pay out the money. He claimed that he wasn't serious about the payment, that Tesla didn't "understand American humor". Tesla eventually left Edison's company and partnered with George Westinghouse in 1888 to commercialize his system of alternating current (AC). The problem here ...

NASA | Looking Down a Well: A Brief History of Geodesy

Geodesy is a field of study that deals with the measurement and representation of the Earth, and it all started when a clever human named Eratosthenes discovered that you could measure the circumference of the Earth by looking down a well. Over time, the field of geodesy has expanded and evolved dramatically, and NASA uses technology like radio telescopes, ground surveys, and satellites to contribute! Video explains the world's most important 6-sec drum loop

This fascinating, brilliant 20-minute video narrates the history of the "Amen Break," a six-second drum sample from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures. Nate Harrison's 2004 video is a meditation on the ownership of culture, the nature of art and creativity, and the history of a remarkable music clip.

The Corpus Clock & Chronophage

For a higher resolution video of this please click here: www.youtube.com Renowned scientist Stephen Hawking is going to unveil a remarkable clock that has no hands and shows time with the help of light. Known as the Corpus Clock, the machine has been invented by and designed by Dr John Taylor for Corpus Christi College Cambridge for the exterior of the college's new library building. The Clock will be unveiled on 19th September by Stephen Hawking, cosmologist and author of the global bestseller, A Brief History of Time. Dr Taylor, an inventor and horologist, has put 500000 pounds of his own money and seven years into developing the clock, which has been inspired from a design by a clock made by the legendary John Harrison, the pioneer of longitude. Of John Harrison's many innovations, he came up with the 'grasshopper escapement, explained Dr Taylor, referring to the device used by Harrison to turn rotational motion into a pendulum motion for timekeeping. No one knows how a grasshopper escapement works, so I decided to turn the clock inside out and, instead of making the escapement 35 mm across, it is 1.5 m across, he said. He calls the new version of the escapement a Chronophage (time-eater) a fearsome beast which drives the clock, literally eating away time. From Poison to Cow Dung: A History of Philosophers' Deaths

Complete video at: fora.tv From suicide by a love potion to suffocating in cow dung, Simon Critchley gives a brief history of the deaths of famous philosophers -- stories he describes as "weirdness, madness, suicide, murder, bad luck, pathos and some very dark humor." ----- English philosopher Simon Critchley, chair and professor of Philosophy at The New School for Social Research, discusses his 2009 New York Times bestseller, The Book of Dead Philosophers. Starting with Cicero's axiom, "To philosophize is to learn how to die," Professor Critchley leads us to his conclusion that to die is to learn how to live. The Daily Telegraph called the book "rigorous, profound, and frequently hilarious" and described Critchley as "an engaging and deadpan guide to the metaphysical necropolis" as well as "bracingly serious and properly comic." - The New School Simon Critchley was born in Hertfordshire in 1960, and currently lives and works in New York as Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research. He failed dramatically at school before failing in a large number of punk bands in the late 70s and failing as a poet some time later. This was followed by failure as a radical political activist. By complete accident, he ended up at university when he was 22 and decided to stay. He found a vocation in teaching philosophy, although his passions still lie in music, poetry and politics. The Book of Dead Philosophers is his eighth book.
