2009 Science/AAAS PhD Dance Entry: Prof. Adam Burgasser

My thesis work was on the search for and discovery of a class of brown dwarfs called T dwarfs. Brown dwarfs are objects that share the properties of low-mass stars (eg, they are mostly isolated, form from the gravitational collapse of giant molecular clouds, and are present throughout the Galaxy) and the properties of giant planets (small, very low mass, and can't fuse hydrogen so they get colder and fainter over time). Brown dwarfs can therefore be considered either "failed stars" or "super-Jupiters" depending on your point of view (or source of funding). T dwarfs are the coldest and faintest known brown dwarfs, and have remarkable atmospheres that resemble those of giant planets: methane, water and ammonia gases and even clouds (of dirt). The dance traces out the development of my thesis work, starting just after the first brown dwarf was identified, a T dwarf named Gliese 229B. As a young grad student with no idea of what to do for my thesis, I first try to study Gliese 229B and figure out what she is, but I'm not very productive. Several other astronomers are searching for other brown dwarfs like Gliese 229B, and I try to jump in but again I don't really know what to do. Then I learn to use the 2MASS catalog, a near-infrared survey of the sky that was taking place while I was a graduate student. With this new perspective I see lots of interesting objects, but so many that I can't tell which are T dwarfs. However, when I start to look for stars that have the same ...

Bob Tuskin Calls AAAS About NIST's Scientific Fraud

www.bobtuskin.com Bob Tuskin Calls AAAS about 9/11 and the NIST scientific fraud. The American Association for the Advancement of Science mission statement reads: AAAS seeks to "advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people." To fulfill this mission, the AAAS Board has set these broad goals: * Enhance communication among scientists, engineers, and the public * Promote and defend the integrity of science and its use * Strengthen support for the science and technology enterprise * Provide a voice for science on societal issues * Promote the responsible use of science in public policy So we thought they may be some help in dealing with the fraud committed by NIST and others in regards to the 911 investigation. Beyond Mammograms: Hastings Center & AAAS Briefing on Comparative Effectiveness Research

Questions about breast and cervical cancer screenings are the latest issues to arise in relation to comparative effectiveness research (CER)—research that compares the benefits and harms of different means of preventing, diagnosing, and treating particular clinical conditions in particular patients. Fewer than half of medical interventions used today are supported by scientific evidence, according to a recent Institute of Medicine report. CER received $1.1 billion in stimulus money and is part of the debate over this years health care reform bills. Will CER improve the quality of the health care system? What can we glean from the experiences of other nations? What can we learn from CER, particularly about major diseases like cancer? What are its limitations and ethical concerns? How can—or should—CER inform the decisions of medical consumers and their physicians? Speakers include: Steven Pearson, MD, MSc, FRCP, President, Institute for Clinical and Economic Review; Senior Fellow at Americas Health Insurance Plans; and Visiting Scientist, Department of Bioethics, National Institutes of Health Richard Payne, MD, Professor of Medicine and Divinity, Duke University, and Esther Colliflower Director of the Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life Steve Findlay, MPH, Senior Health Policy Analyst, Consumers Union Moderated by Alan Leshner, PhD, CEO of AAAS and former head of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at NIH
