ABTV - Beer Tasting 108 - Green Flash Brewing - Palate Wrecker
This is the Hoppiest beer I've ever had. Even hoppier than Mikkeller's 1000 IBU. Plus Palate Wrecker has the most wonderful hop aroma I've ever smelled in a beer. This is a mega awesome hopacoaster of a beer. Here's some notes from green flash on the process. "Chuck came up with a new method to make a Double IPA by performing a double brew to make a single beer. First there is a single infusion mash and subsequent boil at 65 IBU with Columbus and Centennial hops. Then a second duplicate mash using the 65 IBU wort instead of water and a second 65 IBU boil using the same hop schedule. The result is a higher gravity beer with kettle caramelizing in place of crystal malts and an elevated hop flavor and bitterness that might not be achieved with the same amount of ingredients in a single brew. Hop Heads, this beer is for you! ABV: 9.2%."

After a while of hiatus from doing the beer news, we are back with a vengance! We have a lot of things to discuss. From the recent tragic accident at Redhook, Adam Jackson's epic-douchebaggery of trading for beers and then selling them on ebay, the now infamous beer geek videos and expansions from Three Floyds and Lagunitas, crack open a beer and lets get into it! As we mention in the video, Ben Harris, the employee of Redhook who was killed in this weeks accident, leaves behind a wife and unborn child. We were heading to bootleggers to taste some beer and we found a bottle share had broken out! Since we had just come from total wine, we grabbed a couple bottles and joined in. The group was kind enough to let us abscond with the bottles for a few moments to do some quick tasting. This is why I always carry my camera around with me, you never want an opportunity to taste some great beers slip away!

americanbeertv.net - When I was back east I traveled up to Boston to do a tour of the historic Sam Adam's Brewery. Got some good footage of their facility, which is about a 25 BBL brew house used for local beer and test batches. The big stuff is made in a couple commercial facilities in other states. The Sam Adams glass really does showcase the flavors of Sam Adams Boston Lager very nicely. Boston Lager tastes very well balanced, clean and drinkable, while providing quite a bit of malt and hop flavor. After visiting the Sam Adam's Brewery, its easy to see why Sam Adams is the Biggest craft beer company in the US.

Americanbeertv.net - The guys at Sam Adams let me try one of there new 22oz series while I was back at the brewery. I'm late getting the video edited and posted, because I've seen the beer in the stores now, but when I tasted it, Tasmanian Red had only been out for a week. I don't like hoppy reds. You guys who watch the show will know that, but this is called a Red IPA. That works much better for me. At least the brewers are acknowledging the fact that their beer is not a classic red style. That's cool. I see a new category emerging on the Judging circuit. Tasmanian Red is made with Topaz and Galaxy hops. A couple new styles that I'm not really familiar with. More on the citrusy side, but there was some smokiness in the beer. Not sure if they used a bit of smoked malt or what, but it was there and rather nice.

americanbeertv.net - We saved up a bottle of Jolly Pumpkin's Noel De Cabaza from last year, letting it age in box in a deep dark fridge all year. Jolly Pumpkin states on their website that all of their beers are aged in oak with wild yeast. Those wild yeasts really took over the beer and created a superb sour beer. I'm willing to bet that Jolly Pumpkin Noel De Calabaza tastes nothing like it did when it first came out. It's really awesome. Buy some Jolly Pumpkin and age it. You'll be rewarded with some great sours!
