ACLU

The ACLU of Colorado officially was charted as the seventeenth affiliate of the National ACLU on March 27, 1952. Its establishment was the culmination of a period of informal activity beginning in the 1930s. Attorney Carle Whitehead and the Rev. Edgar Wahlberg, minister of Grace Community Church in Denver, were the first spokespersons for civil liberties, and they worked closely though informally with Roger Baldwin and the National ACLU during those decades. By 1941 HJ Crim, Philip Hornbein Sr., Philip Hornbein, Jr., the Rev. Hal Roberts and Stanley Redneck had joined Whitehead and Wahlberg. After World War II, the number of Colorado members of the National ACLU increased to a point which justified recognition of an affiliate. In 1952 the National Executive Director, Patrick Malin, met in a Denver hotel with Whitehead, William Reynard, Charles Graham and Glen Donaldson. This group worked out the mechanics of establishing an affiliate, and on March 27 of that year the membership adopted a constitution, by-laws and a resolution on local objectives and the local organization was officially recognized as "the Colorado Branch of the American Civil Liberties Union." In the 1950s, the climate of political hysteria made it difficult to recruit cooperating attorneys. Consequently the bulk of litigation in those years fell on Carle Whitehead, Bill Reynard, Charles Graham, Arnold Alperstein, Edward Sherman and Edward Sears. The first Executive Director of the ACLU was Glenn Gregory ...

Assassinations, Spying and The Constitution: ACLU President Susan Herman Talks Big Govt and Liberty

"All of our elected representatives have to hear from a broad cross section of liberals, libertarians, conservatives--people who just say, 'This is too much big government. We want our government back,'" says American Civil Liberties Union President Susan Herman, author of the new book "Taking Liberties: The War on Terror and the Erosion of American Democracy." How much has the police state expanded since 9/11, and is there any way to stop it? Herman sat down with Reason.tv Editor-in-Chief Nick Gillespie to discuss the this and other questions surrounding the state of liberty in America. Herman notes that while there have been a few minor changes in policy, for the most part there's been a remarkable continuity between the Bush and Obama administrations in terms of their disregard for civil liberties. She makes the case that liberals must make alliances with libertarians and pro-liberty conservatives like Ron Paul and Gary Johnson if there's any hope of curbing the ever-expanding police state. She also discusses the recent assassination of American citizen Anwar Al-Awlaki and the ACLU's role in representing Al-Awlaki's father in court. Interview by Nick Gillespie. Edited by Zach Weissmueller. Approximately 17 minutes. SAY MERRY CHRISTMAS - American Christian Life United (ACLU) choir - Vocal by Carrie Rinderer

Download your FREE Sheet Music at www.saymerrychristmas.net and together we can make 'Say Merry Christmas' the biggest Christmas song of all time. MP3 downloads are available on iTunes and Amazon. The American Christian Life United Choir - Join in! Every Christmas, the media and PC police tell us, the Christian majority, what we can do and say to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. If you've had "enough" of this biased propaganda and believe in the true meaning of Christmas...now's your chance to fight back and bring Christ back into Christmas. As you know, Christmas is being twisted and turned, pushed and pulled by politically correct merchants who enjoy the ride on the Christmas sleigh...but won't give Christ the recognition and honor he deserves. So, let's challenge these stores with our wallets...and patronize only the stores that celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. If we do what the kids say in the song "If it don't say Merry Christmas in the window...then you don't go in that store" you'll be amazed at how fast the word gets-out. And maybe once again, Christmas will become...what it was...and what it was always meant to be, a Celebration of Christ's Birth! Each download will be registered as an "authentic" vote for bringing Christ back into Christmas. So, let's terrify the media, by showing proof positive, that we Christians, all 230 million of us, are sick-and-tired of being the piñata...for every misguided, politically motivated cause! From aclu.org/rendition: The ACLU filed a federal lawsuit against Jeppesen Dataplan, Inc., a subsidiary of Boeing Company, on behalf of three victims of the US government's unlawful "extraordinary rendition" program. Anthony Romero, a pioneer figure in ACLU's history, believes that the economic crisis and international pressure will force Obama to put potentially divisive issues on the back burner, such as gay rights, the future of Guantanamo, and the war on terror. In this talk, Romero discusses how we must still work to promote activism in the Obama era. - Commonwealth Club of California Anthony D.
