The Ainu Rebels

Interview with some members of the Ainu Rebels. Ainu are the still discriminated against indigenous people of Japan. Wikipedia Definition: The Ainu (アイヌ?) IPA: [ʔáinu] (also called Ezo in historical texts) are an indigenous ethnic group of Japan. Historically they spoke the Ainu language and related varieties and lived in Hokkaidō, the Kuril Islands, and much of Sakhalin. Most of those who identify themselves as Ainu still live in this same region, though the exact number of living Ainu is unknown. This is due to ethnic issues in Japan resulting in those with Ainu backgrounds hiding their identities and confusion over mixed heritages. Official estimates of the population are of around 25000, whilst unofficially the number is upwards of 200000 people. from Action in Asia DVD, by Black Helmet Productions

Kokeshi Japanese Wooden Doll - Ainu-style Naruko Ningyo

Description This splendid little Japanese kokeshi wooden doll is likened after the dress and appearance of the aboriginal Ainu who are believed to be the original inhabitants of the Japanese islands. Archeological evidence indicates that the Ainu may have once lived in villages throughout most of the Japanese archipelago, though today they are found primarily on the northernmost Japanese island of Hokkaido. The distinct dress, somewhat Caucasian-like appearance, language and unique culture of the Ainu set them apart from the majority of the Japanese population, who respect the Ainu and appreciate their culture as an important link to the past. This interesting doll is less than 40 years old and is in fair condition with marks and scratches from handling and discoloration and stains from age and display. This is a "naruko" style kokeshi with a special neck joint which allows the doll to squeak when the head is turned. This clever design was developed long ago by craftsmen seeking a way to cause the dolls cry like a baby. Please read below to learn about the history of kokeshi dolls, one of Japan's most unique and distinctive folk crafts. Size: Height: 4.4 inches (11.2 centimeters) Weight: 0.4 ounces (11 grams) Important note: Images of the kokeshi we list are often uploaded to our Japan Vintage Kokeshi Blog which is an on-line gallery of unique and interesting kokeshi dolls. Parallel Worlds: Art of the Ainu of Hokkaido and Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest

June 6-28, 2009, the Portland Japanese Garden hosted a special exhibition in honor of the 50th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Portland and Sapporo, Japan. Entitled Parallel Worlds, the exhibition featured exquisitely designed traditional ceremonial robes created by Ainu artists from the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido and Native American artists of the Pacific Northwest. This groundbreaking exhibition became the first to juxtapose the textile arts of indigenous cultures on both sides of the north Pacific.

The mukkuri is a tension jaw harp of the Ainu people of Hokkaido in Northern Japan. Traditionally played by women, Mukkuri are quite difficult to sound due to their very thick tongue, and take some practice. Mukkuri are now sold in Japan as tourist items. The Ainu are the indigenous people of Hokkaido, and possibly related to indigenous peoples in Siberia and western Canada, however this instrument cannot be found in the latter cultures. Mina Sakai of the Ainu Rebels playing the traditional Ainu instrument, the mukkuri (mouth harp)

Kaha:wi Dance Theatre (KDT) visited Japan in October 2009 to collaborate and share Indigenous movement and song with a young Ainu group, the Ainu Rebels, led by Mina Sakai. This video was taken by the GM of KDT at the welcoming ceremony on October 1, 2009 where Mina delighted audiences with a short performance of how to properly play the mukkuri. The Ainu Rebels then presented all company members with their own mukkuri made of bamboo. Many different cultures around the world have used some form of the mukkuri, which has also been called a Mouth Harp, or more controversially, a "Jew's Harp" (according to Wikipedia sources.) Thank you Ainu Rebels and thank you Mina for sharing this wonderful instrument with us! During the beginning introduction, which is cut short, Mina is saying, you play this instrument if you want to make the sound of nature, for example the sound of the rain, or you play it for your lover.
