PART 1 of 5: Nutnfancy tackling the often controversial issue of the AK-47 versus AR-15 rifle systems. The bottom line is, a quality example of either gun can serve your law enforcement, military, and "civilian sheepdog" requirements admirably. However many factors and considerations should come into play when selecting your choice. When properly maintained and lubricated, the AR-15 is very reliable contrary to many internet, forum, and magazine myths. However it does not rise to the absolute, carefree ruggedness and reliability of the AK design. Whether packed in mud, neglected for cleaning, or just plain thrashed upon, the AK shrugs it all off and continues to shuck rounds with pleasing and life-saving regularity. It is better than the AR-15 system in that regard. It also features a lightning quick and easy fieldstrip. However the AK design has many flaws which include: poorer ergonomics (like its munchkin length of pull), shorter sight radius and inferior sights, heavier magazines and ammunition, difficulty in mounting optics (less variety in application too), slower operational controls, and more recoil. But many accept these shortcomings to gain the increase in stopping power of the larger .30 caliber round. As shown in the video, this 7.62x39mm round pretty much dies after 300 yards but within its range, it hits hard and defeats obstacles much better than the smaller 5.56x45mm offering. However the AR-15 can easily be had in either a 6.5 SPC or Grendel chambering <b>...</b>

With basic tinkering skill you can do anything from installing rails, to flash hiders and the exotic stocks being offered by many manufacturers. I recently purchased some upgrades from my trusted online vendors to upgrade my Bushmaster XM15-E2S AR-15. The goal/intent of the upgrades were to transform my Bushmaster AR-15 from an iron sight, every day use shooter to a more specialized long range shooter. I also wanted the weapon to maintain some short range capability with the Ghost Ring on the ACOG as well as with the quick release of the ACOG. I could easily slap an Aimpoint Micro on there in about 15 seconds to give it the close in capability. This is a very remote place we were shooting so don't worry. There's no one around for miles. Chris is an Ex Marine and is getting use to the idea of using a scope on his rifle rather than just shooting things out to 500 yards with open sights lol. The wind was blowing a good 20 knots with very heavy gusts so to get as close as he was at 900 yards on a target about 10" inches was very impressive. Not to mention he was using cheap factory ammo. BTW wolf brand ammo review for .223.... IT SUCKS! Two different AR-15 had stove pipe problems with just a few rounds shot through them! We had already shot 100 rounds of Federal ammo though them with NO PROBLEM! They were both recently cleaned so IT WAS THE AMMO!

How to Zero you AR15 / M4 Platform: Mechanical Zero & the 25m Target I have gotten a lot of requests from new shooters who have purchased an AR platform and are wondering how to sight it in, I explain the process that I learned while I was in the Army. How accurate this procedure? Well the only way to prove this is by splitting playing cards which I have done from 20 feet out to 300 feet away (even left & right handed). The 25m Zero Target allows the shooter to 'zero' in the sights for that individual shooter so they can effectively engage targets at 300m (and longer). Direct gas impingement AR-15s suck. Wait a minute, maybe that's piston driven AR-15s suck. Now that I have your attention I'll say they're both good and each has its own pluses and minuses that need your consideration. Long proven in many battles, the DI (direct impingement) M4/M16/AR-15 series are very reliable if maintained and lubricated properly. If it were not so it never would have lasted this long in US military service and many of the "it's broke, its needs replacing now" arguments ring hollow with me. That's not to say it cant have its problems and is failure-free. In the DI design by Eugene Stoner, the introduction of cyclic gas into the receiver makes things dirty and heats up critical components. That heat can accelerate wear and possible parts failure in extended full auto fire and makes cleaning a chore. Also running shorter barrel lengths on a DI gun is taxing to the system and it often needs heavier buffer, spring, and maybe even port adjustments to ensure reliability. Count on some tweaking. Also running a suppressor off a DI gun can cause debris and powder to be blown back into the users face, even with charging handles that incorporate deflection channels. The current piston AR-15s, like the Ruger SR-556 shown, promise to cure many of these problems. They transfer the heat and dirtiness up front at the regulator/piston mechanism, keeping the bolt cooler and cleaner. From my experience at this point, piston ARs will foul in the piston/regulator area and <b>...</b>
