This well-known Christmas carol, "O Holy Night", also known as "Cantique de Noel", was composed by Adolphe Charles Adam in 1847 to the French poem "Minuit, Chrétiens" by Placide Cappeau (1808-1877). It was translated into English by Unitarian minister John Sullivan Dwight in 1855, who included an abolitionist message, and, of course, it has been translated into many other languages.
