'Military & elite benefit from war in Afghanistan'

NATO is getting more help from Russia in the Afghan war. At a ministerial meeting in Brussels on Thursday, the sides discussed expanding the vital transit of military cargo to Afghanistan through Russia's territory. Moscow has provided the alliance with air corridors and railway routes. The link is vital as Pakistan blocked NATO supplies from crossing its territory after an air strike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers 6 months ago. And as the alliance prepares to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, it finds itself in the midst of a string of scandals involving extreme breaches of discipline by US troops Washington says recently published photographs of soldiers posing with the remains of Afghan bombers show an isolated incident of young people caught up in the moment. Afghan military to go broke by 2014?

With the approval rating of the Afghan war at an all-time low, the Afghan military has announced that it will cut 30 percent of its force by 2014. For most of them it was their first experience of war. The whole tour was filmed on a helmet camera by the platoon's sergeant, who captured the moment when one of his men, 19-year-old Private Chris Gray, was killed in a Taliban ambush. The film explores the effects of his death on both his mates in the platoon and his family back in the UK.

Afghanistan massacre - American soldiers have had enough of the wars?

As prosecutors officially charge the US soldier accused of massacring 17 Afghan civilians, what's really going on trial? One deranged soldier or the entire Afghanistan war? Apparently, this is not just a story of an appalling crime, but also one of a US soldier who has had enough of all the endless wars America is envolved in. So, to broaden the story and to talk more about some of those aspects, that the mainstream media is currently missing on, Neil Shea, a journalist and writer joins RT's Kristine Frazao. 'US seeks to stay forever in Afghanistan'

The US seeks to continue the Afghan war into a "perpetual state of low intensity guerilla conflict", preventing the country to rebuild its infrastructure, says a prominent political analyst. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has called for an investigation into what is described as the biggest coordinated Taliban attacks this year. Karzai says intelligence failures on the part of US-led forces allowed the militants to sneak into the most secure neighborhoods. The weekend assault in the capital Kabul and elsewhere left over 50 people--including four civilians and 11 Afghan soldiers --dead. Washington has dismissed Karzai's claim, saying the attacks were likely carried out by the Pakistan-based Haqqani network. This comes weeks ahead of the NATO summit in Chicago, where Karzai is expected to ink a strategic pact with the US. Meanwhile, the US is reportedly gearing up for a major offensive in the war-torn nation. Reports say the US-led spring offensive will be in the regions that control the main access routes into Kabul. Press TV has conducted an interview with Webster Griffin Tarpley, an author and historian in Washington, to further talk over the issue. Watch this article on our website: www.presstv.com

The rising number of casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and members of the Western military alliance of NATO, undermining public support for the US-led war. The accord, which has not been made public, outlines the US role in the country for a decade after 2014, when most foreign combat forces are expected to leave. One of the biggest leaks in US military history has exposed several cover-ups over the war in Afghanistan, including the deaths of hundreds of civilians. The whistle-blowing website, Wikileaks, handed over 90-thousand classified documents to British, American and German newspapers. They also include information on increased Taliban attacks, as well as NATO fears that Pakistan and Iran are fueling the insurgency. Should NATO Exist? Democracy Now! Debate on Alliance's Purpose, Afghan War's Future

DemocracyNow.org - As NATO concludes its largest-ever summit in Chicago, we host a debate on whether the trans-Atlantic military alliance should exist at all and its new agreement to hand over control to Afghan forces next year. "When you are a hammer, everything looks like a nail -- when you're a military alliance, every problem looks like it requires a military situation," argues Phyllis Bennis, an author and Fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies. "NATO is a giant big hammer. The problem is Afghanistan is not a nail, Libya is not a nail. These are political problems that need to be dealt with politically. By empowering ... a military alliance, NATO is undermining the goal of the UN Charter which speaks of the importance of regional organizations in political terms for nonviolent resolution of disputes, not to put such a primacy and privilege on military regional institutions that really reflect the most powerful parts of the world." Speaking in support of NATO, Stan Sloan, a 30-year security analyst at the CIA and former senior specialist at the Congressional Research Service, counters: "I believe that having allies in this alliance for the United States serves our interests, serves a national interest ... [NATO] has always been a political alliance ... I think as long as the member states regard cooperation among them as valuable and even necessary if they have to use military force, they will continue to judge that we need the Alliance."
